How would a guru break into a super competitive niche?

I mean, the tricky part is to spend as less money as possible of course, e.g. the niche of Web Design and Web Hosting.

What I can come up with are as follows:

    1. Do some research (probably choosing a nice sub-niche)
    2. Choose a domain (I love creative brandable names rather than keywordy ones)
    3. Build a site (technical part)
    4. Start writing original articles for the site based on more researches / Making useful compilation or online tools
    5. Submit to directories (I would never do this, just not working for me at least)
    6. Submit to authoritative article directories (really really big ones only)
    7. Help others as much as you can on related forums / Be active on social sites and similar online communities / Make friends
    8. Keep going with 4, 5, 6, 7.
    9. Build a network of niche sites around this topic?

What will you do, if you wanna break into a super competitive niche?

A wrench or a crowbar may also help. They are not going to let you break in without a fight.

I think it would be a long slog.

Directories and forum posting just isn't going to get you there in terms of link building.

    I would add

    social networking and social bookmarking
    business networking

Overall, you listed everything right, but here is a very important thing as a time factor. If you are "fresh and green" and have no experience nor skills, then somebody will probably take advantage and use this niche before you are even close to start. But if you know seo and have some web designers skills, then you have lots of chances

    tips for finding your niche

    Controversial link bait.....

You are going to need some heavy duty content that pisses off a lot of people for this to work.. but if you can get enough people up in arms over what you've written, chances are you can get a ton of people linking to it.

I would build a website from the ground up and go ape nuts on back links.

Self serving one way back links. Write highly targeted SEO articles or pay to have them written. I only trust me and me only though and I don't like link trading since Google is giving the hammer to people who do it obsessively and sometimes people get caught in the draft who aren't doing anything wrong.

    web design and hosting??

I would buy several servers, then I would set up a website

make the prices triple what the average online web company does

Get an office where people could come in and sit with someone to buy from

Have a toll free 800 number

advertise OFFLINE on tv, radio and print ads plus send post cards direct to businesses

Make websites first, bill businesses later

Have a financing plan (with interest)

Accept all credit cards even outside paypal

take orders by phone, fax, in person and online

    Add services like SEO

proceed to kick all the other designers A$$es, because they are only online, using adwords, have no telephone and only take paypal.

Go from homeless and one computer in a small office, to 10 employees in 2 years ;)

There is a new video branding service for YouTube. They download hundreds of videos from YouTube matching the keywords you provide, and insert your ad into the beginning of the video clip and then re-upload it across YouTube accounts.

Thousands of YouTube viewers will see your videos each hour, and as long as you provide suitable keywords, they will visit the website that you advertised in your video ad.

This new advertising is pennies on the dollar and a great resource for testing and building traffic.

Glad to help with more info if you are interested.

    Happy traffic generating.

Video ads on YouTube is simple and the easiest way to get traffic but just like everything... the devil is in the details.

Wow... I agree totally, not so easy to sort out sometimes but when you get it sorted and find good common sense that works for you.... go for it.
