How can a domain with only 4 backlinks have a PR 3

I was going to buy a domain on dp that has a pr3 but it only has 4 backlinks

    How is this?

How can it be pr3 and have so small backlinks?

Well if the site that is linking to is a strong pr4 or 5 then of course its a valid pr 3. PR is not based on quanitity but quality of the backlinks.

I am not an expert on page rank and how it is calculated but there are a few things I could chip in...

    1. As the above said, having just a few very high page ranks can still get you a low page rank
    2. This could be a 'fake' / 'forged' page rank. This is very common and from what I understand occurs when a domain is forwarded to the one in mention and the forwarded domain holds a page rank

I personally would not invest in a PR domain with low backlinks. At least a couple thousand, .edu would be a bonus. Another thing you could consider is that the high page rank backlinks, their web site may lose page rank completely or even minimal which would affect your domains page rank dramatically with such a limited amount of backlinks.

    Hope I helped you,
    Jamie

I can show you 3 years old page with seven links and PR 5

But I don't think they get search enginge traffic because they have a header redirect to another page with session ids :D

I shoud also point out that if the domain is only...say a week old, it is obviously a "fake" or "forged" page rank. It takes time to build up the page rank and Google does not instantly or regularly update the page rank (occurs just a few times a year).

This is a risky area to deal with and if it were me I would just purchase names 3+ years old with thousands of backlinks.

If the domain has quality backlinks, it might be possible.

It depends upon quality of site link added by webmaster, a site can have no back links with PR.
All depends upon site traffic or it also can done using Black Hat SEO process
So first chk the site popularity and traffic relevancy coming towards the site.
