I just read at some forum thread when I was searching around that semi-dedicated is just a shared hosting account with more resources. In other words you don't get root access etc like with VPS. Its like shared hosting on steroids.

I think I like the idea of semi-dedicated better than VPS because I don't plan on needing root access or learning how to run seperate hosting accounts under one plan.

Ah ok, my bad :) Well if that fits the bill then you should go for it. I don't think I ever heard about it until now and don't think it is a very good deal, but that's probably because I am a tech person and I get very nervous when I *dont* have root access :)

I don't much see the advantage over a VPS: if you have a VPS with just one account you'll have the same, but a VPS has better tools to monitor exactly your CPU/memory/disk/networking usage, is easier to move to another (bigger/smaller) server and it is better protected against other users (both in usage of resources ; they are better seperated in a virtualized env than they are in a shared userspace env and in security; a small bug somewhere allows shared accounts access to all other shared accounts while a VPS has a host of protective layers preventing that).

    Just my opinion.

Good points. But it seems like the host would be more on top of issues automatically since everyone is under one root? I'm not sure if I would want to learn how to run a VPS yet. Ive been happy with shared hosting so far, all I would need is just an upgrade in the future with some more resource allocation probably.
