How important is xml sitemaps for ranking on SE's

    Hi DP Members I am a newbie and new to this forum as well. I recently started a site which not doing too well on the search engines. I don't have a sitemap on this site. Is .xml sitemap necessary to rank on major SE's. Please comment.

    Sitemap helps in proper indexing of site. I strongly suggest you to make one, and submit it to Google Webmaster Account. Also, link your sitemap from your homepage.

    I don't know if it really helps, maybe the pages listed in the sitemap are indexed faster.

    Put a link in your robots.txt:
    Sitemap: http://www.yoururl.com/sitemap.xml

    Don't link to your xml sitemap, that's unnecessary (and wouldn't do any good). A sitemap isn't going to make your site rank better, but it will likely help get new pages indexed faster. It can also help save bandwidth, both for you and Google (or other search engines), as if there hasn't been any changes to pages (as specified in the sitemap) there is little need to crawl them.
