had thousands of backlinks (4k to 5k) , now they all disappeared

I had a site that is ranked well is a PR3 and lots and lots of pages and backlinks.

Previously the site showed as having 4,000 to 5000 links (yahoo only) and now in the last two days they all disappeared.

Can anyone help to figure out the cause or what to do?

    thanks

I went and checked and it looks like the Site Explorer is being updated. It doesn't work right and doesn't show some things at all. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I am pleased to announce that after almost three days almost 90% of my yahoo links are back up.

I used various tools to check and im guessing here , but i think zurpit might be right that it been just an update, because after using the same tools again today; they are all reporting the correct amount of links (ok yeah give or take 5%...but im happy now) :)

Thats unlikely because many others are experiencing this problem aswell.

Angela is correct. All search engines rebuild their databases, so do not worry about temporary drops. In most cases your backlink count will return much higher then it was when all your backlinks disappeared.

I check my back links daily, just a habit, and my and others back links go to zero on Yahoo 6-10 times a month, often more I just don't write it down, I am not that anal! the numbers go up and they do down as well. I have gotten very used to the fluctuations so don't worry.

It's either an update or your site is gone from the Search Engines, but as long as you keep a clean site you should be fine.
