If you search for free clipart, the 1st site to come up has no keywords in their code. (free-clipart.net) If so much emphasis is put on keywords, why does it come up 1st?
I'm not sure what you mean, there are lots of other factors that contribute to a site being #1. Interesting though that in this example there is virtually no text on those keywords?
Keyword in domain name, in title, partial keyword in description, has Yahoo directory listing amongst other things but yeah it would be nice to see more relevance via keywords on the page. Do you know if it has held that position for long, or maybe just a data center/dance?
It is perfectly reasonable for free-clipart.net to come up #1 for a search for free clip art. • The search term is their domain name (very helpful in ranking). • The search terms free and clip art are nicely sprinkled in the text of the page (another plus in ranking).
There are several factors coming into play here. It's a good example that simply spamming a page with your keyword doesn't necessarily work. It also shows how meta tags are not much of a factor. The keyword is in the title and the domain, so that has to be a factor which is weighed more heavily then some might suspect. What else could it be? The site has 495 inbound links. That's not a ton, but it's a number that appears to be natural to the search engines. Some are noFollow links, most are doFollow, some are from related sites and some are from completely unrelated sites. When you analyze the anchor text, it varies but the most common are "free clipart", "FREE Clipart - 25000 Images", "100% All FREE ClipArt" and "free-clipart.net". Really good anchor text. The large majority of links use the anchor text "free clipart". And because their keyword is in the URL, even when someone uses "free-clipart.net" as the link, the anchor text still has their keyword in it. Also, there is a factor here that you can't game the system with: This URL has been active since November 1999. That's nine years, practically an eternity in internet time. That URL has built in trust.
Hi, Do you think keyword is the only factor which decides popularity? NO... There are so many other SEO's to get popularity.
It's PR4 and very old domain (1999). They have many links with that keyword as anchor text. You can check them here: http://www.backlinkwatch.com This explains everything.
Well, the important thing is that their domain name already has the keywords in it. Furthermore, sometimes google will also review certain sites manually esp in the case of free cliparts with only images and they will rank it high based on the number of stuff offered there.
The domain name is actually from Feb. 2000, but one thing that nobody here has mentioned is the site uses frames AND if you look at the google cache it comes up as just a white page. indexL.html is nothing more then the header of the site telling you to please wait while there banner is displayed index2.html is the actual site itself. Strange that they are number 1 if you ask me.
That's the power of in-bound links. Remember a fews years back when an effort was launched to create links of "miserable failure" to the official White House biography of President Bush. In about 6 weeks the link to George W. Bush's biography became the first result for "miserable failure" on a Google search and yet the term "miserable failure" was nowhere to be found on the website By creating links to the official presidential biography page with text reading "miserable failure", a relatively small number of website owners and bloggers were able to make the site appear as the first result when searching for miserable failure Political blogger George Johnston was the coordinator of this particular Google bombing, In October 2003, he began to encourage his visitors to participate in the "bombing". The bomb proliferated beyond the Google web search: "miserable failure" returned images of Bush on Google Images and Local and Maps return the "US Executive Mansion" and the White House as the first two results for "miserable failure" in Washington, D.C After over two years, Google finally defused the “Google Bomb†that had returned US President George W. Bush at the top of its results for the term "Miserable failure" This Google bombing proved the power of in-bound text links
I tried to add my site to thefree4u.com, but I keep getting the message "Your description length should be more than 50 symbols." Does that means characters? It will not accept mine even though I have more than 50 characters.
I don't think meta tags are as important as they use to be, what matters now is back links with relevant anchor text
backlinks could be one thing second the domain has the keywords in it also the .com is a parked page therefore the .net is the next one in line that will get that spot
Exactly. Whilst the keyword appears on screen, not in the source (hence my comment re not on page). The old domain and backlinks also probably adding a lot of weight. 500 odd not massive amount but they may well be quality keyword related links from high PR sites. This site may be an interesting example of what can be achieved but it's not the type of site I personally find ideal (eg: browser adjustment, frames and still have to hunt for the free clipart).
