People think that putting their links all over the web helps. If your links don't appear natural to a user, chances are they won't to Google either.
You should make sure you mix up your Titles (anchor text) when you submit to web directories. The description isn't as important to make unique.
the length of the Description field of a directory submit page, varies from minimum about 250 char and max. i have ever seen about 900 char. then you have big problem, i guess. because directories rank must be PR5+ and the length of description less than 250 and 500 of this kind of directory.
What i used to do is, I will prepare 50 different titles and 10 to 20 different descriptions to submit my site into 1000 directories.
I would use a dozen or so different descriptions and titles, but anymore, I'm good if I get 5 setup when doing mass submissions.
