I would prefer, if god existed, That where help was needed and deserved it was given. Just like if i was drowning i would want, And expect, A passing decent human being with compassion and empathy to throw me a rope.

The god you are painting a picture of is one which would stand by and watch the person drowning while explaining that it was because of their "free will" that they fell in. Which is essentially blaming the victim and something which you should find repugnant and cowardly.

It is becoming very hard for people to invent convoluted rationalisations to explain all the qualities that they attribute to god and how they can exist at the same time in the same entity. Give it a few more posts and they will retire their brains and resort to posting scripture.

You both miss my point. If you have the choice and freedom to do whatever you want to do, then why do you believe that god will punish you if something wrong? In my dictionary, freedom means the ability to do whatever I want to do, not just what god 'expects' me to do. So, god is a nonentity IMO.

Personally, I do not view God as a mean god just waiting to deal out punishment. No, I view God as a loving God who has given us freedom of choice.

I am a married man (happily married, I might add) and I love my wife very much. I do not try to keep her under my thumb ... I do not try to keep her in submission .... I do not expect her to get my permission to do things ... I give her freedom to live and she does me likewise. We talk about things & we share our lives. To me that is love. If you truly love someone, you will not try to keep them repressed & oppressed.

You say that "freedom means the ability to do whatever I want to do, not just what god 'expects' me to do." Well, that's fine but what if your freedom harms someone else (or even yourself)? To me, it can all be summed up in "Love your neighbor as yourself."

    Mark

ps. I have enjoyed talking with you guys this morning, but I have to go get lunch! :)

The nun wouldn't say the same after what happened. Same as millions of others who are suffering unspeakable torments because of other people's 'free will' to inflict them.

I have faced some pretty big struggles in my lifetime. I'm not wishing this situation on this lady at all, but I know just because of the struggles I have faced and the many times I have been done wrong by people, doesn't make me wish that my ability to make decisions was eliminated all together.

God doesn't have nothing to do with this issue.

Yes God does stand when people are getting murder, raped or tortured. God doesn't interfere with every little thing (just imagine how pointless it would be for us to exist if God does).

People make choices, those choices effect us and those around us. Just because some choices have negative effect doesn't mean it is because God wants it, but because God allowes it.

Those who have begotten evil done to them will be rewarded in the hereafter, and those who done evil will be punished. God will stay away from our problems until the end of times where God will judge us.

    Peace,

Well, if god doesn't impose his will, and men wrote the bible, then that means they wrote it freely without the will of god guiding their hands, which means it could very well be a bunch of bullshit that those men made up. Right? I mean if god could stand by and watch a nun get raped, then why couldn't he stand by while men write an completely erroneous record of his existence?

It is terrible that the Indian government is doing little to protect its people.

In the Catholic church, they believe in miracles. Such as raising of the dead, multiplication of loaves of bread, changing water into wine, and healing of the sick. IMO, to say that G-d could not get involved in saving a nun according to Catholic scripture anyway, would be incorrect. Christians tend to attribute all the positive things that happen, to G-d. If suddenly someone came and saved that nun, they would probably give G-d credit for that. Since no one saved her from torture, christians just say G-d had nothing to do with it, and is unwilling to interfere with our free choice.

When i was sitting in bed almost dead from an illness i picked up overseas, i was a little frustrated with god but towards the end when i wasnt sure i was going to make it i put it in gods hands. I was fighting time because the medication they prescribed for me(which i found out later they could have given something alot less brutal to my body) had to be taken for 4 weeks and the only problem was that after 2 weeks it became poisinous to my system. Well i ended up taking the meds and lasted the 4 weeks and i survived even though ill never be the same(cant go swimming, cant take off my shirt even in the summer time, cant take cold baths, 75 degree temperature
feels cold to me ,insomnia etc etc bla bla bla)

If i had never gone through this suffering i would never be able to empathize with peoples suffering like i can now. Back then i didnt understand why god let this happen to me, but now i have a better understanding of it
and in the end it was a gift from within. If any of my friends are suffering or need help they say the word and i jump. Now i hope i never have to go through this again, but looking back now i can see gods wisdom fully.

We humans tend to have such a short sighted arrogant view of things, thinking that life on earth has to be peachy-keen. Now we can sit back and let things get worse or we can get off our feet and be there for each other as human beings. Its our choice

It is possible, but not likely. Even the smithsonian institute has came out and said that the bible is as accurate of a historical document as any other of the same age or older. As stated before, you aren't forced to believe anything. :)

historical accuracy does not equate to factual accuracy. For instance, if I wrote A book about a place called London which had a mayor called boris and a pm called Gordon it wouldn't make my inclusion of a vigilanti called superman accurate. Do you see my point?
