I had read the full article some are already known to me like the contest link baiting; some are new to me. =)
Nice article, but i found some missing relevant aspects. but anyways bookmarked it. got somthin to read tonight.
Yes Lyndon Antcliff wrote an article about a teenage boy stealing a credit card, having a party at a hotel while hiring a few hookers. Story churned out a ton of back links, then he admitted that the news story was all a big lie. Then even more people talked about it. Wish I had the article, but the client he wrote it for removed it from there website after making the television news in there area.
Nice list of examples. I think your link bait will be even more powerful if you combine a couple of them into one.
The client could not have been sued, it was a fictional story about nobody that even existed. The client also approved the article before being posted on the internet. In the end, if we would have kept quit then nobody would have known the story was all made up. I am not saying go out and lie about everything, but if Lyndon would have kept quit the link baiting would have been a success for both him and the company. Do you believe everything you read on the internet? I sure hope not.
i think #5, 7, and 8 are the most effective :O along with the lying aspect come controversy, and thats money in the bank for attention grabbing.
Many people will believe foolishness. Perhaps I should create a lying or funny article for link bate.
I have found the contest link baiting to be very good at getting lots of backlinks. I am not entirely comfortable with it as it is really buying backlinks. Sure people love free stuff, I know I do. In order to get maximum effect you may want to ask for a backlink as a means of getting entry into the contest. Many bloggers respond to this as placing a free contest on their site also draws traffic and attention. What do you all think of this link bait? In essence you cannot get into the contest unless you add a link?
