Something I learned about anchor text

I speculated that having a bunch of PR5+/- authority links.... pointing to your site..... with no anchor, and limited competition, makes your site strong on the SERPS

I figured then, just get a few PR0-2 crappy backlinks with the targeted anchor text --- and that should be sufficient enough to get you high rankings since your site is heavily linked from Authority sites

It appears..... this is not true

    I'll explain:

Ok, lets say I a site called www.site.com.... and I'm trying to rank for 2 keywords: Buses, & Trains

Just for the sake of my point... lets say both keywords are 100% equally competitive

Now lets say I have 100 backlinks.

50 of them are pointing towards www.site.com, with no anchor.... and lets just say all 50 are PR6 authority links

25 of them are pointing to "Buses".... and all are PR6 Authority sites

25 of them are pointing to "Trains"... and all are PR0 crappy blog commenting & directory links

I will most likely rank very high for "Buses"

But I will rank very LOW for "Trains"

I thought that, having major backlinks to www.site.com would be enough....

But it appears you must have strong anchor text for each keyword on its own, rather than just major backlinks pointing to the site with no anchor

Yes, that is correct. The keyword in the anchor text is a must.

That is why big sites don't rank high for every word written on each of their websites pages.

Incorrect. You will rank high without proper anchor text as well. But the content of the blog has to have enough keywords and the page from which you get the backlink should be targeted toward the particular keyword. In that case, without anchor text as well, you will rank high for a keyword. However, anchor text is important in SEO. My point is that it is not 'terribly' important.

Here is how Google ranks your pages:

If you search for a keyword, say 'trains' Google will show say one million pages, correct? All these one million pages have at some place or other, the word 'train'. And their relevance is determined by their backlinks, number of times word appears, etc. Google doesn't show, however, every web page on the planet that has the word 'train' in it. Hence, Google doesn't count irrelevant pages. This point is important.

That means, when you get your backlink from the pages that are indexed in Google for the keyword 'trains' you will rank high for trains as well, without even proper anchor text. And if you want to rank high for a competitive keyword, the best thing to do is:

Search in google for that keyword, find which sites come to the top of the results (these are the relevant ones for that keyword), get a backlink with/without proper anchor text from these sites. And you are done optimizing for the keyword in question.

This would only be true if there were only a few sites with the keyword in the anchor text.

If you do like you said and get irrelevant anchor text backlinks (e.g. dog) from high ranking pages for "train", others will outrank you with their relevant anchor text backlinks for that page.
