Big peaks in visitors from Yahoo - Any Ideas Why?

Discussion in 'Yahoo' started by jonbuoy, Sep 29, 2008.

I have long held the belief that Google is king and the vast majority of my site's traffic comes from Google, however I've noticed some strange peaks in traffic from Yahoo.

There seems to be no logical reason, no pattern such as the day of the week. All visitors are unique and new.

See the image below taken from Google Analytics

Has anyone else seen similar peaks?

Yes I have such peaks as well. You can dig deeper and see which page is sending you the traffic, to which one of your pages, and you would be able to find out why is this happening. Maybe a forum post is replied to and gets some attention day after day.

I tend to get more traffic from yahoo, probably because yahoo ranks my posts higher.

    It happens.

I rank quite high for a lot of terms in Yahoo, but it still only sends a few visitors a day.

Maybe Yahoo is starting to grow again, who knows.

The seo for yahoo differs from that of google and have you done any seo attempt for yahoo. That could be the reason for the spike in traffic and for me, google gets the lion share :)

Each of my websites overall have had a large peak in Yahoo visits... even a brand new site to a simple page which is actually under construction, my business wiki page has seen a huge spike for some really weird reason. And it seems, they are all from the same location, they must be changing some algorithm to work locally. the visitors seem to be coming from where my hosting for that site is

A Yahoo algorithm update might be on the way and will come soon enough, or NOT?

I am ranking better for any single keyword in Yahoo than in Google. But still getting 90%+ of my traffic from Google.

The peaks might as well be the Yahoo-bot maybe?

Thanks everyone for taking time to take a look and respond with your thoughts.

The clicks are unique users and don't appear to be the Yahoo-bot.

Digging further down, all the peaks are coming from users searching Yahoo for one particular search term. The site ranks consistently top for this search term, so all I can think of is that some external factor causes lots of people to search for that term on a particular day.
