Images cannot, ALT tags in the images (<img src...) can.

I would think image filenames with keywords in them should help a bit.

Yea it can help, If you search a word like "educating" or "big ships" the images returned in the results can help bring visitors to your site. (keeping them there is another story)

    Cheers

    Oh well,
Google Images can bring you huge traffic. Though getting a high serp in Image Search won't impact your normal serp.

I totally agree with you about the above abhik...

But optimizing your website images, filename and alt tags and ranking high in the Image Search of Google, might become an opportunity to rank first in the normal Google Web Search, right?

The alt tag should be descriptive with the naming of the file with the keywords in them.

It's not strictly true that doing well in image search won't affect 'normal' serps. In these days of Universal Seach, images are being included as part of non-image searches. Test it - do a search for a celebrity name - any celebrity - I bet an image comes near the top.

this is a tough question to answer. images can indirectly help with rankings. with images, you need to please visitors. you need to make it so that people link to your site and say to their friends "hey check this out..." so in that respects with all the incoming links, yes images can help.

in terms of SEO, some people only put images on their site without ALT tags making google is clueless as to what it's about. it's important to use the "ALT" tags so that google knows in what context the image is placed on to your page. it's also helpful if the anchor links to your site describe what the images are about.

The keywords placed using alt tags will relate to your web contents and generally this will give better chance to rank higher. I'm not sure how much it will affects serp but it does help in some way or another.
