Who to contact and how?

If you were to offer a web based service to other businesses, how would you go about promoting that service?
Would you be phoning the companies and asking to meet with their human resources guys, or would you email them?
I am in the process of starting quite a new and possibly very useful web based service that will be of great benefit to other companies, but I really am struggling in the best way to take this forward.
Any suggestions is, as always, appreciated.

If you haven't establish any reputation, of course the best thing to do is to contact them and setup an appointment. If possible, it's always good to have acquaintances who could recommend you to speak to the right person. It's not easy but it should work out somehow if you put effort to it.

    Hi Brian,:)

Lycos has pointed out right what you can make to get a contact.

If you don't mind I'd suggest some other ways, too.

In these sceptical times I think the traditional letter in which you introduce yourself and ask for a date to pick up a personal contact is a good way.

Another (modern) way is you can put up a short 1-2 minutes' introduction video about you and your message and send it to them by email (if you haven't an acquintance who can mediates).

Enquire about a couple of days on a telephone, in both cases. The more is on its' way.

    Hope it helps someway,:)

I am gonna give you an advice that will save you tons of your efforts;). Go to LinkedIn and set up your professional profile (if you did not do it before). A few days ago they launched groups and now you can use "search" for finding groups, related to your business AND post your promotions directly to the groups. It's absolutely wonderful opportunity and in your situation it's the best way to go:)

Thanks for the advice guys. I think it will be a case of "knocking on doors" and trying to convince businesses that this is a good idea!
Obviously I am UK based, so I am looking at UK businesses, hopefully if it takes off, I can employ someone to do all the traveling around!! :)

Find a hole in the system of the companies. Now with that hole, find out how your web service will be of help. Make sure your service is worthy enough of their attention and time or they will simply ignore you. Present why they need to choose you - your USP. Those are just some tips.

It's better to just send an email in detail about what your offering. Also you wanna do research on the compny to find the right person so you won't go through the departments.
