This is huge, and it can either be a brilliant strategic move by McCain - "heading back to attend to the service of the people" (when polls show him getting hurt, quite badly, by the situation - witness Virginia, for instance), or an obvious attempt to call a time out when the momentum is running for his opponent.

I personally think it is a smart move. This is a big issue that our country is facing, and I think the perception that people will get by this is that this isn't just an important issue to us "blue collar folk". The economic situation has halted the momentum that McCain had. At minimum, he should go out and focus on this so that he can perhaps regain some of it. If anything, this is going to be a huge discussion among the media. With that, they are again talking about McCain and he is starting to smell like roses again. It's a good move from a political standpoint, but something that should have been done anyhow given the situation.

Lets be honest pizzaman, the only person who has been scared to meet up is Obama. McCain has requested to meet in person at several places via Town Hall meetings with Obama in the past. He even did it on the infamous "The View Interview". In reality, Obama didn't want to have to debate McCain up until this point. McCain has never seemed the least bit worried about it and I don't think this is any indication that there was any worrying on his behalf at this point.

This will backfire if Obama doesn't fall for it.

Fact is this bill will pass. Everyone knows it will pass. They don't need McCain to come back and save them or tell them what to do. Hell the way mccain has floated to the middle during this campaign, half the republicans don't even like him anymore.

They're not gonna listen to him.

EDIT: oops. Barack just said he wants to continue with the debates! Game, Set, Match.

EDIT: Bush just embraced McCain's decision publicly. They might as well have done another hug photo. Game over.

Barack Obama: "I believe we should have the debates. It's important that we get before the American people and explain our position. They need to see the people who will be in charge of this issue over the next several months after the election."

Barack Obama: "The American People need to know what it is that we plan to do for them".

Barack Obama: "If they (congress) need us, we both (he and mccain) have big planes".

    EPIC LOLz

    McFAIL

    Game over.

How about they help the economy and stop wasting over $1 million a week (per swing state) on commercials!! Living in a swing state, I'm pretty damn sick of seeing a McCain or Obama commercial literally every 5 minutes!!

I agree - this may potentially explode McCain's campaign. It's exactly the response I would have counseled Obama to take (yes, he calls me all the time). Brilliant riposte, and, personally, I agree with him. All of a sudden, having shifted his position to a position diametrically opposite within a span of 3 hours, with polls shifting decidedly against him, McCain feels it is critical to suspend the campaign and head to Washington to fix the mess. Sorry, John, but riiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggghhhhhhhhht.

Um...shouldn't the $1 million plus they are pumping into the American economy weekly actually help the economy? I know they are contributing WAY more to the economy by campaigning than I am. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are some guidelines concerning what campaign contributions can be spent on. I don't think "the economy" is one of them...

Watching McCann's performance at the Republican convention it's obviously that he doesn't have much strength as an orator so I'm not really surprised he isn't that eager for face-to-face debate with Obama.

I know if I was one of the people who contributed decent sums of money to McCain's campaign I'd be PISSED right now.

If Obama waits a week or two the FBI will be crawling all over him about Fannie and Freddie. Obama needs to do the debate know.

He didnt say he was resigning the nomination, he said he was suspending campaigning to deal with something. It's a mistake IMO, but he didnt ask me. Personally I agree with Obama's response.

The American public is gonna decide who draws the short straw and "wins" the chance to deal with the biggest economic fiasco since the depression, so his role in the campaign supercedes his impact in DC. He can go vote on it but it'd probably be a mistake to leave the trail for long. Thatd likely be as ineffective as the "Rose Garden Strategy" George Sr employed. In a nutshell GB Sr said "cant be out giving speeches, gotta stay in the Rose Garden thinking weighty presidential thoughts... gotta do it, gotta do it." May have been started by Carter when he lost... I think I was drunk during that campaign. Durn college kids.

Hope Northpoint is correct and it turns out to be a strategic move that pays by breaking the momentum, but it doesnt look that way to me. Be interested in how this odd event works out.

McCain's campaign manager is linked to them even more, I hope you think McCain is going to have the FBI all over him for that little tid bit as well.
