SEO theres 2 types on-page factors and offpage, to give a quick overview onpage is just the title tags, keyword density [althought some people disagree], meta description tags and offpage is backlinks, anchor text, etc.

But remember SEO is just one part of the traffic equation don't get to hung up about it, you can always do other things such as articles, social networking, social bookmarking, videos, and the whole array of web 2.0.

I would say all the above. All of the components that you put in that poll plays its own role in SEO, and without them you won't be listed very high on the search engines.

For a professional SEO person, you should at least understand how the search engine work, the theory how search engine will rank the website. It is more than just put keywords on the title and building back link. I think this is the most important skill SEO professional should have.

I would say all of the above, other than creative & design and coding. Those things can be handled by another department within a company. A good seo needs to be well rounded in the various tactics involved in seo. An seo can't excel with skills focused on just one of these attributes.

Tricky question. My first thoughts were link building. And for the most SEOers this is the most important, especially if they have an IT background. But then I thought I you are very good in marketing / creating a hype or a lot of buzz then the marketing strategy is your most powerful link building strategy!

well, in some sense yes but you will NOT exactly know the algorithm
since these are propitiatory and NO ONE in the world knows exactly how
they rank a website apart from their top engineers.

so don't trust some one said I will rank your site in #1 spot!

by the way chinese-seo are you a chinese from New zealand?

if you have 2000 backlinks, you wont get at top in SERP. We need better Title, META Tags and META description.

To get on top of search engines you need
    Link Building
    Good Coding
    Good Title
    Good META's

there should be some links on High PR sites.

I believe Content is the most important part of s.e.o then Link Building. If you write a very good, detailed, and keyword filled article, words ( or phrases) in that article can be ranking #1 in Google the same day you publish it to your website. Enough good content on your website and eventually you will become an authority on the subject, the time frame just depends on how competitive your niche is.

Link building is an on-going process. It takes time to acquire good relevant links, and you should hunt for these links on a daily bases. I contribute about two-hours a day to seek out new relevant links.

Title tags, meta data and everything else follows those two.

Content is King, and Links are Queen!

Coding is the most important. Without the <title> being SEO correct, the average site will never rank.
    Links will be second,
    And visible content next.

Clearly, the most important skills for SEO success are:

    1) The ability to create or outsource the creation of quality unique content

    2) Link building through blog farms and other avenues

Link building from related themed authority sites to your site must always be top priority. you can have the most optimised page (on page seo) in the world with all the standard 7-10% keyword density on page, keyword phrases bolded etc and keyword proximity of around 50-60% with multiple natural keyword phrases in your title and meta tags filled etc but without links you can get nowhere ranking in the top 100.. I would be surprised if you were ranked in the top 500 tbh.

Onpage is important but dont mess around optimising onpage factors when you should be getting natural links into your site which will build a better long term rank for you..

and of course good content (not duplicated)
