What is a good page rank?

I see sites and advertisements for all these different numbers of page ranks. Is there a reference out there that explains each rank and what it takes to get there? And the results from each rank?

Technical definition along with math formulas can be found here at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank

Page rank is nothing more then a formula google developed years ago that backfired and blew up in there face. It was a way to determine how important or popular a given website is by not only the amount, but the type of backlinks that website has pointing to it. If you have other websites with say a PR6-PR9 linking back to your site, then the next PR update you will see a big jump in PR. Now if you site is already a PR3 and you have several incoming links from PR0-PR3 then chances are your site might not even make it to PR4. This backfired for google when buying text links was a way to boost a sites PR with ease. Now google goes after sites that sell text links by simply penalizing that sites PR. Keep in mind that PR has no effect on your rankings in the SERP's, so when you see sites advertising to raise your PR and your ranking, they are full of crap.

Anywhere in between, ok depending on niche! No way of really saying PR3 is good!

What's the point of PR if it doesn't effect your rank in SERPs?

PR really does not mean that much anymore! It is hard to say if it has any affect on SERPs, if it does it is VERY small! So a good PR really doesnt mean much! One of my sites has a PR of 2 and is out ranking a few sites with a PR of 5 that are in the same niche. Content is far more important these days than PR is!

There is not a thing as good or bad PageRank because the numbers or values show only a part and corner of the optimization efforts webmasters are doing. Many top rankings sites have lower PRs.

PR mostly depends on the number and quality of backlinks your site have. The more backlinks you have, the better the PR will be. And no one knows how many backlinks you need to get any specific PR, only google knows about it.

It depends on your niche, and you could never say for ex: A PR of 5 or 6 is a good pagerank...!

I wouldn't get too hung up on PR. It's nice to have a big number but it's more important to target keywords that will bring relevant people to your site. Maybe if you're looking at some directories to get links to your own website then it's nice if they have a good PR, but for your own site, there are lots of better things to worry about.

There are many great PR0 sites and plenty of rubbish PR8 sites. Facebook didn't have a PR for ages and it was one of the top websites around!
