here is something I wonder about:

the site http://www.dummy.com/whatever has page rank 2.

    subdomains like:

http://whatever.dummy.com have ZERO, regardless how many backlinks I try to create just like I do for http://www.dummy.com/whatever.

So I began to wonder if subdomains can get a page rank at all. Please give some info on that, much appreciated!!

This contradicts what I have always thought. Believed sub domains to be a good way to raise the authority of a site. Interested to know others thoughts

I believe that sub domains are counted as completely different websites. They can get good page rank. For example http://forums.digitalpoint.com is a page rank 7.

It is probably just much easier to get PR to a folder as the PR transfers directly to internal pages. For a subdomain, you would have to start with scratch building links.

Interesting. I was just thinking about this myself for where I work. They have a domain that's old, but not doing anything (PR 0 etc) so I wanted to set up a site specific for one of the products. I didn't know if a new domain or a subdomain would be better. Prolly go the subdomain route. Thanks!

More aptly, they are two separate domains. But you are correct. They would be treated as two separate websites.

The PR isnt on the domain itself in most cases.. It's on the individual pages within the domain/sub domain unless your a high pr authority site then it propagates to other pages. So when you link build all you pages back to your root ie.. mysubdomain.domain.com that will get ranked for your keywords but if you link back to other sub pages your rank is distributed throughout your site.
