    Hi there all,

I was wondering if anybody knows numbers of the conversion rates of Youtube video promotions?

I am considering to create a bunch of Youtube videos for website promotion purposes, but I am trying to find some numbers of conversions how many visitors are really visiting your website after seeing the video on youtube.

    Looking forward to your replies.

    Have a nice day!

It all depends on quality of the video, and relevancy to your website. One time some guy that had stolen a family guy clip and put it online linked to my site for me and it got quite a few visitors to my site before he got banned :p

I would love to hear more about this as well. I have yet to use YouTube as a means of advertising, but I know it certainly has it's benefits and is becoming very popular.

Unless your videos are top notch, your conversion rates are going to be lower than 0.1%.

Trust me on this one...I promote videos on Youtube for marketers all the time. You will probably get 0 conversions if your video is the least bit amateurish.

Thanks for your advice, it seems you have some experience with this Youtube advertising since you can tell us about the downside when a video is amateurish. But I assume you also know about conversion rates when a video is top of the notch?

If a video is really good, then you can get a decent conversion rate because people will assocaite quality with your website. I find that if the video is spammy and unrelevant to your site then you wont get a very good conversion rate. A good method might be to upload videos of really big events where you aren't allowed to upload videos of it. For instance, the Usain Bolt world record time. If you search for that then you'll get a load of results of videos that are simply a still image, but an annotation to link to your site. With these sort of videos it doesn't matter if you post unrelevant content to your site, as long as it's a really popular event you should get a decent conversion.

The conversion rates even for very popular videos is less than 1%.

It really depends heavily on what you're promoting. I use YouTube heavily for promoting a couple different things. As long as you have an attractive thumbnail and take advantage of video responses, you can get a decent amount of traffic. From that point, conversions depend on how compelling the video is.

I would like to know where this 1% comes from? My youtube conversion rate is more like 40% - 60% more the google generic traffic.

This is from my Google Analytics account for the past 30 days.

    Traffic source:
    google (organic) ------- 47,433 --- 40.70%

    (direct) ((none)) ------- 43,881 --- 37.65%

    youtube.com (referral) -- 4,252 ---- 3.65%

Even though google referred more then 10X the people, more people from youtube signed up for an account. I run a VBulletin powered forum.

And then, there is a running poll on my site where new members can vote on "how they found the site." Here is a link to the thread - http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=10336

    Source----------------- Votes --- Percentage
    Google Search ---------- 233 ----- 36.69%
    Kev's Youtube Video's --- 266 ----- 41.89%
    From a Friend ----------- 36 ------ 5.67%
    Other - Explain in post -- 100 ----- 15.75%

Even though Google sent over 10 times the traffic to my site, the people that came from youtube were more likely to create an account and post in the forum.

Keep in mind my site holds several #1 spots in google SERPs for my target audience. My site also has over 120,000 pages indexed with google.

I do not know how to do the math, but one guy on another site figured the youtube conversion rate was somewhere around 1000% greater then google generic search traffic. I think its somewhere around 30% - 50% more.

But either way, youtube can provide your site with targeted traffic. Click the "My youtube channel" link in my signature, it will take you to my channel and will give you an idea of how I use videos to promote my site.
