Hi, Just curious about your views on this. Am I better to create new domain names or just ensure correct naming of pages within the existing domain? For example. Let's suppose my site promotes electrical stuff. Components etc, B2B. Looks like this is a real site! Never mind, maybe they can learn something The site might be called www.electricalstuff.com How effective will it be to market a new range of circuit breakers on www.electricalstuff.com/circuitbreakers.htm versus www.circuitbreakers.com Your thoughts?
It depends on how many different (but still somehow related) products you're going to promote. For just a few products I would choose separate domains, for many products - subdomains. You will save money from domains and promoting just one site is much easier.
Google (and increasingly other search engines) are pretty smart at figuring this type of stuff out. They will figure out the relationship between electric and circuit breakers and realize the two are related. I'd recommend you have your major keyword phrase in the domain name if possible, and then the keyword phrase in the other part of the url. e.g. as you say electricalstuff.com/circuitbreakers.htm This is of course looking to promote electricalstuff.com as an authority site on electrical stuff in general, of which one item they have info about is circuitbreakers. electricalstuff/electric/household-items/circuitbreakers.htm Which is better? In my experience it all comes back to how you promote it. You may have a slight advantage using the exact keyword phrase in the domain, but promoting it will be where you strike gold. I've had page one success with either method. Of course sub domains are another option. Cheers Tim
If the keyword is slightly competitive and worst, has some authority pages, DON'T build keyword rich domain websites. You will never be able to rank them. For example, I think circuit breakers is such a common phrase that why will google rank u on top (when there is already tons of authority content on it available). I think its better to build one authority site and than add pages to it.
If the electricalstuff domain is old, ranks well in search engines, and there is not enough to add as to make a new website (I would say at least 30 or 40 pages with interesting content) I would use the old domain. But If you have much to add about the new topic and your old site does not rank particularly well, I would go for a new specific domain and build on it for the new specific topic.
