makes you wonder... GOOGLE sure wants us to use Analytics

notice they are advertising it with adwords/adsense

They really want to push google analytics and get more and more webmasters to fall for installing it.

We know that it is just basically a spy type thing where google is trying to find out information to use against webmasters...... they are trying to advertise to get more people to fall for giving them free information

It's simple, the more information they get from us, the more they understand our browsing habbits and the more they can bring their advertising costs down.

They save more money if they can get information across to us for free. If they can track what you're doing, they know what you'll be doing.

lol people are so cynical about google like when chrome came out everyone was running around panicking and going mad

do you really think there going to risk the status by employing dodgy underhand tactics
Come on guys use your brains, google doesnt need to do anything underhand or anything thats even the slightest bit dodgy

there a great company who indirectly keep a alot of people on this forum in buisness.

Lets stop with all this silly talk now and just accept google controls the web and will do for a long time, that doesnt mean there doing anything sly to make money

It also gives their company positive public relations (can't use the PR abbreviation when mentioning Google lol). Most webmasters are so happy that 'kind, generous Google' has provided us with a great free analytics program. If they get all webmasters too love Google over other search engines, that trend just spreads. It gets all websites and blogs talking about Google as if they are the god of search engines. Then any visitors to those websites or blogs believe all the hype and are brainwashed into loving Google. It's a pretty smart marketing strategy...suck up to webmasters and the benefits will trickle across the entire web.

sly? they are perhaps not necessarily being sly, although they aren't warning people that they may be giving google information that could damage their sites in the search results

it is not silly talk, it is the reality, sometimes it is better not to give google too much information

google can use traffic stats as a way to determine real website popularity and use that in their algorithm to determine serp positions

IMO, if they were doing that then they'd be measuring click throughs from SERPs too. But both methods are far too easy to game so IF they do use that in their algorithm then it would be a very small part of it.

I think more likely they are using bounce rates that they can get more easily through google analytics, and they may drop you in the serps depending on what they see (it is unlikely that they would use it to raise you in the serps, as like you say it would be easier to game, but I wouldn't doubt that information you give them in analytics could cause your site to drop far in the serps for a bunch of keywords)

I would never risk using Google Analytics on all my sites.

Are we not being a little bit paranoid here
Google does not need analytics to 'spy' on us if they want to

all a visitor has to do is simply 'view source' in explorer or firefox and there it is in plain view 'google analytics' script so any visitor that wants to find out if you are using analytics can do so easily

Call it spying... but it's free and good. Better than even the paid ones out there.
