    Hello
I am thinking of setting up a new directory

Should i use a sub domain on my main domain, If subdomain should i start with
    dir.site.com or directory.site.com or www1.site.com

Has a number of back links (in hundreds)

    or

Use my other less popular domain

Both of my domains have PR 1

    has few backlinks(under 50)

    Any suggestions

You may not want to hear this but...

Why do you want to start a directory...is it to make $$? if so,, almost any other method is better/easier.

Better you use site.com/directory instead of directory.site.com IMO.

sub.domain.com is treated as a separate site. domain.com/directory is not. Free directories will be more willing to list sub.domain.com then an internal link. That may or may not matter to you.

    Good luck

Using your other less popular domain might be a better option. My second choice is to create a sub-directory like directory.site.com within your popular site.

does your main domain have anything to do with webmasters/seo?
