Hey does anyone know any resources where I can find out how to program my very own Text Based MMORPG?

I am looking for any kind of resources but more specific to that sort of thing.
I realise that their are plenty of threads - its just I couldnt find any for this specific project.

    Thanks,

You may want to search in sourceforge.net, there is a lot of such programs going on. Maybe look for a team that is active and has an interesting text based MMORPG and join the team.

Thanks for the advice - however I am a complete newbie at coding and scripting so I don't I would be of any use to a team - it is probably ambitious for me to want to start by creating a game, but everyone has to start somewhere.

I am interested in making a Mafia, Kings of Chaos, type game. I have literally no clue where to start - atm I am searching.

You can start by learning PHP, frankly ambitions is good but ambitions need to be back up by real solid skills and hard work. I would suggest getting these skills first if you are intend on creating a game. A second way is to spend money to get one coded for you.

Cool, I guess its never a bad thing to have PHP knowledge in the repertoire anyways. If I put a couple of hours each day, I will reach my goal. Thanks.

If by text based MMORPGs you mean the Multi User Dungeons (MUDs) of old then there should be a bunch of free sources available. For example search for something like Dikumud, I believe that was one of the more popular ones.

Sorry I can't be more specific. It really has been a long time.

You could always hire a coder to create one for you, or consider finding a partner for the site (with the coding skills required)

Agreed. In fact just thinking about that now I have a few friends who specialise in PHP. In any case - before I start learning a coding language what is better for my situation - javascript or php? Which one will be more usefull for creating games.

I know that javascript and flash go hand in hand so thats a plus. Any reason why I should take PHP over Javascript?

    Thanks

EDIT: I just realised that Facebook requires you too use something called Facebook Javascript which is a tad more complex. I will therefore put more emphasis on learning PHP but I will also learn Javascript.

RPG games are easy to code but they take a LOT of time to make.
I would suggest you buy a pre-made script and modify it.
Such as the ones that can be found on these sites...

    MyPimpScript.com
    PardioWars.com
    Game-Script.net

PHP is a server side language.. so that is what you want to learn for a multiplayer game.
JS is executed on the client side so wouldn't be useful for an online multiplayer game other than to enhance the UI
