Shoemoney claims that BOTW is in talks with AOL. I thought that was pretty interesting...read here. I certainly don't think it could hurt, but I wonder how much they can make it better? I wonder what they'll charge, if anything? Added here rather than the DMOZ section due to it involving more than just DMOZ and being of potential interest to directory owners as a whole.
It will be interesting to see what direction they take with it. It’s going to be a huge antiquated mess to clean up and volunteer edited directories can be difficult to manage.
DMOZ is a valuable resource with a great database. The first thing I would do is no-follow the database to protect it from any abuse.
Not at all, link freaks are like drug addicts to deal with and have no regard for a quality resource.
That would be great DMOZ is a nice directory to be in. It is extremely hard to get in due to the volunteer nature of its editors. If it is commercialized by BOTW, I would expect to pay but expect that my domain be listed. Beats having to wait months for DMOZ, fate unknown.
DMOZ is kind of a dinosaur. Maybe a fresh new owner will improve it to its former glory. I would be curious if they change to paid reviews if they acquire it.
True I get the same rush when I get accepted in DMOZ This is coming from a directory owner which makes the statement even more shocking. So a human review isn't sufficient for the link to count?
Spend a few years replying to emails and phone calls as to why my poor quality website was not accepted. Getting cursed and swore at, and even physically threatened. You might see where I’m coming from.
That's life mate. Tell them to get fucked and build a better quality resource. If we can't trust a human review what the heck can we trust.
what are you talking about? Dmoz is already commercial...you just have to pay a corrupt editor to get in. Corruption is rife over there and yes i am a former editor.
It certainly would be a big undertaking, especially with BOTW having their hands full already. But, I guess AOL wants/needs to unload some web real estate, so if not BOTW, then who?
yes it does actually Im sure that if aol or google or whomever does own dmoz where to sell the price would be in the easy "millions"....yes alot of zeros for one directory thx malcolm
AOL owns DMOZ. BOTW does need DMOZ they are already better then them so why would waste their money? This rumor seems very outlandish to me.
AOL bought Netscape which was providing hosting for DMOZ. DMOZ might still be a foundation or something like that but AOL owns the servers and bandwidth. AOL can pretty much do whatever they want to the listings.
