Get paid to... donate to charity?

    Hey DP’ers

I have this idea for this site, which gives out free 1 cents to people. I know someone around here has had this idea before, but the site eventually closed down. However, this time, it’s different. I don’t and will not gain anything at all from this site, and would even have to fork out for the domain name and hosting, and any other necessities. Essentially, it’s for charity.

I’m not very good with words, but I’ll try to illustrate my idea. The basic idea is that people come, click a button and get free cents, while others advertise in hopes of a getting surge in their site traffic. So the advertisers actually donate to charity, and pay the clickers their cents (although I don’t earn anything from this, I’m still not that rich to supply the net with 1 cents).

So, advertisers will advertise, and their fees will be split 50-50. 50% will go to a charity, and the other 50% to the 1 cent pool. Advertisers can ‘donate’ any amount that they like, but once their contribution to the 1 cent pool has ended, their advertisements will be taken off the site.
For example, if advertiser A ‘donates’ $50, $25 will go to a charity, and $25 to the 1 cent pool. $25 = 2500 one-cents, so 2500 clickers will see his ads. before they are taken off. However, this isn’t very cost-effective for smaller business/advertisers. So, advertisers can choose to share their pages with other advertisers. That way, for example, 4 advertisers with 4 ads. of similar sizes will watch their money stretch 4 times over; instead of paying 1 cent to each person for each click, they share the cost with the other 3 advertisers, and thus paying only 0.25 per click. Advertisers can also choose to share the pages, but have a larger ad. size, but of course the ratio would then be different.

‘Clickers’ (as they will be known in this post) are the people who click for the free cents. They will be told that, when they get a free 1 cent, they are also donating a cent to a charity (the advertisers donate 50-50 to charity and to pay the clickers).

Let’s call the cent that clickers would be paid the p cent.
Let’s call the cent that the advertiser would pay to charity for each of the clicker’s click the c cent.

After the clickers click, they would be asked which charity they would want to donate their c cent to. They can also check an option to say that they don’t want their p cent, and they would want to also donate it to a charity. However, if they don’t check that option, they can then get their free cent.

The whole idea is that, even though 1 cent may not seem like a lot to you, it can help the less fortunate. And by working together, may 1 cents can go a long way.

The site will be 99% transparent. I will post receipts of the donations to the various charities, and how much advertisers pay/donate (unless they specifically said they don’t want to). There will also be a list of all previous/current/ advertisers.

If anyone could better explain this idea, or illustrate a diagram, I’ll be grateful.

    A few things I can’t figure:
    1. Should one advertiser’s ad. finish running first, then another is shown (have an advertisers’ waiting list) or have ads. shown randomly?
    2. Is this idea feasible?
    3. How many of you will actually advertise (assuming you have the money)?
    4. How many of you will actually get the free cents?
    Potential difficulties:
    • Advertisers don’t like this idea. (No advertisers :()
    • People abuse the system, and get a lot of (too much) free cents.
    • What you can do to help
    • Help develop this idea (it is still in the planning stages, nothing is confirmed yet)
    • Think of a catchy domain name for the site.
    • Code the script (for free, or at least a nominal sum. Remember, I don’t earn anything from this) :D
    • Sponsor the site! (ie. Become an advertiser)
    • Advertise for the site (when the need arises) on your websites/blogs
I am looking forward to any suggestions that you may have. Of course, feel free to bash this idea (please tell me why) :D.

    - Jayden :D

The main problem with this idea is it's just too complicated. I started reading it thinking 'okay, I'm an advertiser, would I go for this scheme?' and half-way through lost the plot entirely. If you can't explain it in 2 sentences, you can't sell it.

Really? I thought it makes sense.

I'm assuming you mean that people get 1 free cent off your site. You then get advertisers onto the site who will want to advertise because you get a lot of traffic because you're giving away free money. Then, the idea is the money that advertisers pay will cover the 1c and also leave enough profits for charity?

If it works it would be a brilliant idea, but I can't see it happening I'm afraid, purely for the simple reason that 1c isn't enough. I know for one I wouldn't click it for the sake of 1c, but then I suppose if you advertise that clicking gives money to charity, then people will do it...

I love the idea, and it seems sense ( or cents... LOL pun).
HOWEVER, what you ened to do is establish a register/sign-up for the 'clickers' and allow their to be a limit of cents/clicks per day.
As well, another challenge will be trying to get the site running through it's initial phase. I know ALL busiensses/websites go through this, but seeing that this is more of an experiment makes it harder to get it successful enough to move on.

I'm very interested in this ideas, so please PM me with more details... I'd love to work with you on this. :)

But is it worth a click for just 1 cents its not all that much money to be honest. and if someone was looking for free 1 cents there not exacly the best internet user for advertisers. Sorry not trying to knock your idea here but dont you think i am talking business sense here?

well i like the idea,i think that is very generous of you.
but i dont think that people are interested in earn 1 cent..maybe 5 or 10 cents would be better.. to people dont abuse the system, you can block the ip allowing the person to get a free cent only one time per day/week

you will need an custom script to do it,you have to find and programmer to do this for you for free,it will be hard, but not impossible, you can negotiate to put the programmer's adversiment in your site for his work..
    good luck

I run a site with a similar premise. I love the idea (that's why I built the site). From experience, I think your biggest challenge will be to get advertisers to pay 2 cents per page view for a click to donate site. I believe there are sites that do it, but they are the original established: thehungersite.org, etc.

Best of luck! Feel free to PM if you have more questions.
