IT really depends on how competitive your keywords are - if they truly are - links really count!

... You only jsut realised this?

Google has ALWAYS significantly based its search results on content, backlinks can only get you so far and are unreliable.

If anybody puts forward a theory that any one factor - be it backlinks, keyword density, domain name - is THE factor that will get you to no. 1 in serps, then the one thing you can guarantee is that someone will straightaway show you a site that's ignoring that factor and doing well in serps.

It's a well-known fact that Google has doesn't rely on backlinks alone to determine SERP. There are basically thousands of criteria that they use, and nobody actually know how they come up with the ranking.

i do think content is king though and backlinks are queen. with good content comes the (natural) links. having said that, it's a slow process waiting for natural links so you have to go out and link to your site yourself via blogs and forums.:D

It's an ever increasingly complex algorithm, you can't say that one thing is more influential than the other as it changes all the time...

I'm sure I'm just repeating what everybody but the thread starter has said so far, but there's nothing wrong with a strengthened opinion... ;)
