You shouldn't focus on Dreamweaver, just code by hand. You will have to learn Photoshop to actually make your designs. You know HTML and CSS already, so that's a good start ;).

You don't allways need Photoshop, I code all my work without. Personally, I use free tools. Paint.NET for making the images, and Notepad++ for writing out the HTML and CSS code.

I'm not really anything great at web design, but I'd recomend you look at some other designs first, some free templates maybe. You can use these to get some ideas, and get a feel for how the coding works together if you ever get stuck.

Good luck, and maybe show us some things you've made once you have!

You will need to learn photoshop whether that is for layouts or just headers and graphics. It is the industry standard.

As you know HTML already, ignore anyone telling you to use notepad only.... what is the point.... software will do this for you and you can then edit anything you need to by hand, thus saving you hours. Using notepad only is like walking 50 miles rather than getting in your car.

If you want to just jump in, jump into wordpress. all you really need is html and css, there are some tutorials on putting together your first template. You'll only need a little bit of photoshop for the header and stuff. maybe for making a gradient background. Don't let php scare you, its ok for your first one to get a template and modify it to your liking. Then you can start making sites in a couple of days from scratch, with a login and backend admin which you can skin to really impress your clients.

Learn some more about javascript, PHP, etc etc..

You can download the w3school tutorials with the link in my thread: "Req: W3School Tutorial Offline Version for Download. "

HTML and CSS is for Web Page building.. Which is just a Basic part of Web Development. Dreamweaver is for Advanced webs with flash etc.. but can be used for building simple pages too..

There are many tools, depends on whether you like WYSIWYG or not.. I use only freewares..
NotePad++, NoteTab Free, Chami HTML Kit, Amaya, PageBreeze etc..

My HTML knowledge is just in beginner - intermediate level..

Yes, take the above advice. Look at my site, I use Word Press and it is excellent.

Also, I use Dreamweaver to enhance the site and Fireworks for my images. I can write code; however I like to my work as I write and Dreamweaver will allow this.

Go to Youtube and there are excellent FREE tutorial videos.

    Hope that helps.

First you will have to design your website in photoshop. Then you have to slice the design and integrate the slices with html and css. There are very good video tutorials in youtube on how to build website with html and css . Search with "basic html and css" in youtube.

If you have a good hand coding skills in html and css, then a little knowledge on how to make good graphic designs then you can consider yourself ready to go. Later on you can add up skills in other languages like javascript and php so you can do some programming effects on your sites. Just take it easy and learn one language after the other. Once you are dedicated in the game, your skills will improve very well with time.
One advantage of being a web designer is the ability to provide technical services and earn money and also running a profit making site for your self.

I am excelletn in dreamweaver div css menus [small menus].
but I am poor at graph design, I mean I am not good at graph software like photoshop, fireworks.
So where I design a website, it is a headache to design the logo , the header, and mid and large graph.

Good advice, I wouldn't even bother wasting your time with dreamweaver. If you know HTML why would you bother. Coding yourself will save you so much time in maintaining your code. It will also be much "cleaner" as all that dreamweaver generates is utter crap.

Solid advice there, GIMP is another graphics program that is worth a look. You DON'T NEED to learn Photoshop at all, especially if you are working freelance.

That may actually be the worst analogy that I have ever heard. Dreamweaver generates such poor code that you will spend a large proportion of your time debugging the crap that it generates.

Saving you hours? I am pretty sure that I can beat the development time of somebody building a site in dreamweaver.

Other than these, I may say that try to go through the W3C standards once. This will let you clear any doubts or imaginations on HTML and CSS.
Tools like Photoshop are also very important to have images in your sites.
Then try to pick up some Javascript. This will help you a lot to bring some dynamicity in your designs.

if you know basic html/css i'd suggest getting your head around them so you know them top to bottom, then maybe look at php/javascript.

if you want to do it all on your own you will need to either outsource the graphics or learn to use a tool that suits you, if you are going to freelance there is no need to go with photoshop (it is expensive) as there are free tools that you can use.

If you definitely need photoshop have a look at a price comparison site like pricerunner.

If not try out GIMP its free.
