I am currently doing Directory submission in General Directory.

Is this really important to rank my site quickly or to have good PR?

Directory submissions will help you rank in the search engines for long tail search terms. Those terms will get you some hits that will turn into links from other webmasters if you have good content. If you keep doing them your site will benefit in the long run.

You can get to a PR3 with free directory submissions alone. It usually takes some other links from good websites to get to a PR4.

Directory submission is a great source of one way link. Submitting your site to tons of free web directory is a good start for your site, but there are other relevant factors like forum posting, blog commenting, social bookmarking, etc...:)

To get quick PR, submitting only in directories wont help. You should place your links in dofollow page where there is good PR. For that, try article directories, blogs, forums. You will get decent PR.

I suggest not to do bulk submissions,
Just submit your website daily in 10 directories...
    along with other tactics...

I think directory backlinks have some value but it is not very high. They can be of great help for not very competitive keywords.

Directory submission can help a new site rank for some, fairly non-competitive terms in my experience.

For older sites it's hard to judge really, but I think that when you do have a fairly well-ranking site for some terms, adding a few directory links with new anchor text/ keywords can help you do pretty well for the new keywords. So directory submission IMO isn't simply useful for new sites but older sites too.

I did 1000+ directory submissions for one of my sites, but I only was able to see 10 or so backlinks in google webmaster tools. So I no longer submit my site to lot of directories. I suggest you only pick high PR directories to submit a site.

I'm not thrilled about the effect directory submission gives. A year ago it was a real effective way to climb the serps. Now it gives very little effect. You should mix things up a bit.

Agreed, it's one spice in the meal but doesn't do too much alone and there are huge quality differences, it's not like a directory is a directory.

Directory submissions won't help you much. In fact in some competitive niche they won't help you at all.
You need a lot of quality in-content links from related sites ;)
