As far as they're coming from good neighborhoods, doesn't matter how they come.

If done right, link baiting is probably the most effective. If you can create a buzz that gets bloggers and social bookmarkers really interested, then you could get a flood of traffic. As those people all link to you, your search engine rankings would go up too.

The hard part is thinking up something that will get their interest.

Link baiting or simply creating something useful such as widget bait is a great way of getting lots of decent links without having to ask.

forum posting, article marketing, and getting other people to blog about you

Directories are way overrated and have no value in SEO anymore it seems like.

I'll agree with that. I had my site put on 1000 directories and my PR is STILL at ZERO! A good test (for this information that is) because I am only now starting to ramp up other forms of links and advertising.

My brother has a site that has a PR 3 and he has HALF the incoming links that I do...but my links are all of poor quality it seems.

    Lots of work to do!

Just wondering what you guys like to call "whitehat linkbuilding".

I think this should be rephrased to link baiting, forum spamming, signature spamming, blog spamming, and mass directory submission spamming (with the occasional exceptions).

If you post on blogs or forums for the sole purpose (even if it is a good comment) of tagging your link with an anchor keyword, you're spamming - especially if you use your anchor keyword in the process.

Of course, there are exceptions - but most people don't know the difference nor do they care.

Whitehat building techniques are very limited IMO, when you're playing by Google's rules. Link exchange? Bad - Google obviously doesn't like it much - you're trying to inflate your rankings.

Just wondering, does anyone else agree? This is just my opinion. If you think you're a whitehat link builder, think again.

Well, I kind of agree. Because, it basically says that if you try to promote your website, you are going against google's rules. But, at the same time, what else are you supposed to do? Wait until they come? Unlikely!

Interesting... Did you submit to high PR directories? I submit to the newest directories I can find, with the lowest PR, and have PR 4 sites that are under one year old.

I do not submit to high pr directories. I basically hired someone to submit my site to something like 1000 directories. My unscientific sample of these directories shows them all at PR 0.

My site is only a few months old. I had just thought I'd make it out of the PR "zilch" stage by now. But then again, I have not really begun to get any traffic yet. I am just starting to look at other link building techniques (this is my first site, so I am learning as I go).

Working on article submission to article directories and slowly see the numbers increasing naturally. Another one is working on "dofollow" forum signatures in similar niche.

Directory submission, dofollow signature forums, article, blog comments, dofollow socialbookmarking etc are the best way for the link building.
