I think Obama's writers knew exactly how this would be percieved when they wrote it. I think they thought that there wouldn't be a backlash though for it, instead, they expected an applause and some laughing at the comparison with Palin's joke about hockey moms. I'm not going to hold it against him, I think its funny. But I think you are being naive if you think that this quote is just a coincidence. :)

He should apologise because you don't understand how metaphors work and, Even after having it explained to you time and time again, still repeat the same falsehood?

I listened to him and understood the words that were coming out of his mouth. You should try it, it's a fairly accurate way of determining what someone is saying, far more accurate that ignoring what someone said and inventing your own version or reality based on how some people reacted to it.

You can call yourself what you want!

Don't call others - when you are referring to some one else you need to be nice.

Of course, given that many on this forum have spoken the truth - Obama is the biblical antichrist, and an Al-Qaeda Manchurian candidate set to overthrow the United States on rising to the Emirship, is anyone surprised he coined this term and used it as a personal attack on Sarah Palin's person?

I mean, c'mon, the term has never before been seen in describing the pastiche of truth set upon an actuality of falsehoods.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

    Lipstick on a pig.

Of course, John McCain isn't a stranger to what he meant with the pig reference:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601070&sid=aHn9Rsd12c1w

Now, let's make sure we all lose our shorts, here, misconstruing what should be obvious in an attempt to protect the virtue and integrity of Sarah Palin - the woman who chose to use her RNC speech as an opportunity to call the Democratic nominee for the President of the United States a traitor to his country, in so many words.

Or, let's consider pulling our collective heads out of our ass, 'kay? Thanks. ;)

Priceless - we cross paths, Stox and Grim. John McCain, referring to Hillary Clinton's plan:

The key distinction both of you seem to be forgetting is that Obama is the Antichrist, and an Al-Qaeda Manchurian candidate hell-bent on overthrowing the U.S. Just gotta, really, really gotta be.

This is exactly right. His writers knew exactly what they were doing.

You see it everyday here on the forums. Some poster making a veiled reference that slams someone pretty hard. Then that person gets all upset and the poster cries foul. "I didn't say that... blah, blah, blah"

"Lipstick" has been front page news for the last week. If SP had not used "lipstick" in reference to herself a week ago, there would be no discussion today.

On one hand, I can see that Obama didn't accuse SP of being a pig. This is exactly what his speech writer had planned. Any of you that think that his speech writer made a mistake, think again. This speech was reviewed and blessed by each of his strategists before it was ever given to his teleprompter guy.

If this thread tells me something, it's the deplorable status of pigs.
If it was something like "Even if you put lipstick on a lioness, it's still a lioness", maybe it wouldn't have been an issue.

Obama would do well not to use the the phrase "The beauty and the beast" in his speeches.
Someone might make out that the phrase refers to the duo of Sarah Palin and Mccain.

    Funny funny world ........

I think there is a clear difference in the way the metaphor was used from the way McCain used it:

Here is how he had addressed it according to reports:

    In essense that says this:

Obama's (which as been quoted so many times that it no longer needs anymore quoting can be summarized as this:

There is a clear difference. One being personal, the other not. :)

No issue, then, with McCain referring to Hillary Clinton's plan as "Lipstick on a pig?" No worries, just a description of his appraisal of the highest profile woman politician in American history's plan for universal health care? Obama, somehow, is different?

No worries on Sarah Palin calling Obama a traitor to his country, in so many words, before a crowd of the RNC, enthralled by the gutter?

    Sorry, I see alligator tears.

Really, there's a difference between McCain's comment on Hillary Clinton's universal health coverage plan, and Obama's, responding to the McCain ticket's public assertion that they are the "agents of change" in Washington, with:

I have not wanted to say any of this, but after what I've seen since the selection of Palin, I will, now. The only slimeball tossing going on is by a ticket so cynical of the mind and heart of the American people it will jump to the gutter to get the prize. That ticket is the McCain ticket.

I am surprised at your response NorthPoint.

Again, I will say that if SP had not referenced herself using the term "lipstick" a week ago, there would be no discussion today. Reporters on the scene commented on how the crowd caught the reference right away.

This was a calculated addition made by a speech writer and blessed by Obama and his inner circle. Then he feigns innocence. Go ahead and believe him if you want, but I think that those guys (and you) are smarter than that.

    Source?

If "to cheer" is the "to get the reference," I'd have to disagree. I'm also astounded anyone is trying to pain McCain's statement as a statement in the usage as it's commonly used, on display in the dozens of places I post above - among the infinity - when he was specifically referring to HILLARY CLINTON'S PLAN. Obama was referring to the ticket, something he's referred to since the inception of the campaign: McSame. Whether you agree with him, or disagree, divorcing the notion of "McSame" from "lipstick on a pig" is about as broad a reaching as anyone could attempt to muster.

    Ridiculous.
