Yes you have 2 more option to increase traffic and ranking. Participate in theme based forums. Means if you have lots of websites on travel then its better to be the part of travel forum that allow dofollow signature links. Also social bookmarking gives you lots of traffic. But remember your website must have excellent content then you will also get the advantage of link baiting.

Well it depends upon how you promote your site. If your keywords are not competitive keywords, it doesn't have any sense at all. Try to research your keywords and analyze it whether the keyword you've got is a competitive keyword or not.
