copyscape is very reliable, not sure why you have described reservation about it... I use it most of the time, and preferred method, apart from Google / Yahoo search with sentences that I pick up at random!

u can use www.articlechecker.com for find duplicate content.

 

tried out "article checker" at http://articlechecker.com it shows some phrases have 2 duplicates some 4 and some 8. What is the the number that google considers duplicate coz many phrases match just by co incidence? anybody knows about this please help me out. i just lost my first page ranking at google might be due to some duplicate issues.

Copyscape is perfectly alright, they have paid version too. Other tools advised
above are also good. You can also google one or more paragraphs of the questionable content.
