I run a travel related site, currently it has no traffic. I don't know how to promote it, and I have no budget to buy banner ads and google ads.

Can anybody give me some advice how to promote my site with around $10 budget per month?

Lots of "blood, sweat and tears"... Seriously, write articles and get them posted at other sites, article directories, etc. Get links from other quality and related sites (e.g. same general theme as yours). Get your site ranking on Google and Yahoo to obtain traffic from them as well as from people who visit the site you place your articles and links on. :)

First tell me how old is your website???, if it is a new website obviously you don't get traffic, you do directory submission around 100 good PR directories....then Submit Unique article to some good article sites.....change your title and meta tags targeting your website related keywords....if you do all these things definitely your website traffic will improve.....

Submitting site to hundreds of directories is just time waste. They don't increase your SERP's.

Keep it simple.First write some quality content, next..submit those articles to social bookmarking sites like digg,stumbleupon,indianpad,etc.. they'll definitely bring you some decent amount of traffic..Once, your articles are indexed by google, you'll start getting traffic from google aswell.Be Patient....

One time, I surf on the net and see that www.websitegrader.com is useful for a newbie as me. So I advise you to use it so that you could see your website's lacks.
Other, submit your site to www.dmoz.org, www.google.com (Google webmaster tools, useful), Yahoo!, MSN (Live webmaster tools, useful).
Also, you will need to participate in some forums as this forum, you will see many brothers here having a signature with links (max 3). Perhaps some nice days, someone will know to your site via this forum.
I dont know much, but all that I know to share with you.

I tried social bookmarking like posting in digg, since I can't post everyday to digg, and if I posted one and it will bring me some traffic, but several days later, digg will not bring any visitors.

Try out yahoo answers for getting traffic. Conversion of traffic into business is depend on your site. You can create blog and post new story twice a week and submit them to social sites.

Do some good link building and do not stop it, maintain it. Write articles and post them in article directories. Write unique content and informative stuff on your site.

Layout and navigation must be visitor friendly.
