After my first time getting hacked last week I just came up with the question why do people hack. It is really pointless and stupid and with the whole "for a sense of achievement, or to show off" arguement, would it not be a better sense of achievement to make the website rather than cause it to not work (big whoop, I had backed it up anyway like any other sane webmaster, no offence if you don't do so, lol ). What are your opinions on this matter? By the way, I decided to use it as a chance to redesign the site too, , can anyone tell me what they think of the new www.anhalo.co.uk ? Thanks, Anhalo
I think people hack because they can, or because they like a challenge, or possibly because some people just get a kick out of doing things that are wrong/bad/frowned upon.
They do it for fun, revenge, or as you say, a sense of achievement. Why do arsonists burn a building instead of building one? I've gotten hacked twice, so make sure you know where it came from and remove it. I made the mistake of not being absolutely sure about the origin and made a lot of extra work for myself by leaving myself open to it a second time.
Most of the hackers enjoy hacking others sites and think it is an achievement just because they can intrude into the security.

Because they don't want you to become as a MASTER and a successful webmaster. Now you know very well how to protect your website. They'll made you to learn new things.
Some people are thrill seekers, want a challenge, see how far they can go. Others like Turkish hackers (turk-h [dot] org for example) are kiddie hackers and depend on a script to do the work for them cause they're too lazy to actually learn how to hack. Hint: sToRm_sEVEn made one script. Protect your config.php file if you have one, that's one way the hackers can intrude.
Hackers are the most respected coders anywhere and I would be proud to be called one. Unfortunately, you people don't know the difference between "crackers" and "hackers".
I wish other people would learn the difference. Hackers are the people that save us from crackers. hackers find holes in scripts and help us write better scripts. I know some hackers some are good and some are bad but the are all respected in there field. I want to be a cracker personally.
Crackers are the ones that partake in illegal activity such as fraud and theft for money correct? If so, you just announced your secret to devise a plot to take over the world.
Hacking for them Is just a fun... Some People Just love to see other angry nor crying for something... or else... you have done something bad to them and hacking your account is their turn back to you...
I had a classmate when I was in college who always brag about him hacking some sites. I don't know if he does it to show and tell everyone what he can do or he has nothing else to do.
you are right . On orkut also their is one community where they throw challenges for hacking sites and other things and winner get good rep .
Doing stuff like this (hacking websites etc) proves that a specific person needs to grow (so called cracker) and get a life. Basically every security company hires hackers to develop products to secure others from being hacked & cracked because they know how a hacker or cracker thinks and what he/she can do to hack anything. That in my opinion is the real purpose of hacking. Not Just that to steal someones passwords and destroy their hardwork.
