Hosting is a big market you can earn many times more if you will become top hosting company or nothing if you fail. But what makes this niche very attractive it is resudual income - if you have satisfied clients they will pay you as long as they will stay with you.

But if you are asking if you can make 1000$ a month with hosting affiliate programs I will say, yes is possible. If you really have seo skills then you could make few sells every month. It can also take a few months to start making 1000$ a month with that.
Average commission is around 100$ per customer. So 10 customers = 1000$. For a little guy like you the best idea forward is to offer some sort of incentive, e.g. you will install some scripts or word press blog, web template etc, this way you could get some clients without going against the 100000 competitors. If you are shooting for 100 or more customers per month, then yes - you will need to work it out a bit harder/smarter.

What he probably mean, that some of the clients cancel there order soon after they buy it (usually under 3 months) and in this cases most of (if not all) affiliate programs will take you back money that you earn bringing this clients.
