I want to Change my home page title

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by nadavbentor, Sep 7, 2008.

I am optimizing a site about courses. The inner pages are each about a different area of courses. (exaple: computer courses)
The home page Title is only one word: Courses.
I want to add many of the courses area names to the title of the home page.
    1. Is it dangerous to suddenly add so many words?
    2. will it help my ranking since my home page will be relevant for all these terms? (because i see that anyway google prefers my home page over inner pages)

    Thank you

My Problem is that i don't think "Courses" is a main keyword. I think no one will type it just as it is. Wouldn't it be better to have all the really main keywords of the site?

Ah.. Well, your page title should relate to your main keyword that you want to attract visitors from search engines. Ideally this should be reflected in your page url. The keyword should also be repeated several times on your homepage.

Changing anything in the <heaD> Section is ok to do as long as it's done on a weekly only basis. But changing the primary keyword phrase all the time will flag Google and you will get penalized for "Over SEOing".

Just keep the same basic keyword phrase and make the changes on a weekly basis and you will be ok.

By all means yes, enlarge your title, keeping it to 65 characters or less.

Your main keyword, courses, only draws 68 searches daily, per WordTracker. But online college courses, to give an example, draws 564 daily searches. And free online courses draws 156 daily searches.

So yes, enlarge your title to include some more keywords describing your main keyword, which is courses. You will put yourself in a position to draw traffic from a larger variety of more-searched-for keyword phrases.

yes it will definitely help you but its not enough that you put some keywords in title only, for getting ranking you should use such keywords in content, meta description and keywords also.

Optimize home page for all pages and courses you are providing.

    - i've changed the titles on 3 of my biggest sites without it adversely affecting the rankings so i don't think it makes a difference as long as the original key word is in there. in your case, keep "courses" in the title.
    - yes i believe your rankings could help with the title change targeting the key words you're trying to pull from the search engines.
