I have received an infraction on posting a comment on submitting a link in a directory where I replied as "Submitted. Thanks for sharing this info".

I have not read this forum rule and I have posted such a reply and I would not post likewise the next time.

Surely would comply to the rules and regulations of this forum.

In my opinion this rule is totally rediculous. I am outraged.
The consequences of this ludicrous rule is that digital point posters announcing their directory will get less posts and in many cases their directory will simply run off the page with 0 posts! Also When you list the Web site you have approved it is useful because in many cases it will cause the directory owner to approve that listing quicker.

Additionally, In my post I also mentioned that the directory worked smoothly which really is feedback. This rule has got to be abandoned!

Please atleast compromise that if a digitalpoint poster posts some kind of feedback that acknowledges the name of the directory that was posted or a specific aspect of the directory that was posted then they won't get the infraction.

Whoops, that was my intention as well, and I like you only read this after, I guess all I can say is I won't do it again - but my intent was to get sites approved, as I have submitted my butt off to dir, with tons never getting approved [and they are quality sites, not spam viagra stuff]

Maybe disabling post count or sigs or something is a thought as someone mentioned earlier, as also without ppl posting response maybe folks with *good* directories may not think they are getting the best targeted response from taking time to post here?

I was guilty of this, was marking my threads because I thought you had to reply to subscribe to a thread. I know better now, my bad.

    Bumping??? Gimme a break

I got infraction for saying Thank you to the person who generously offered us to submit our sites to his Directory for FREE

What is wrong with you people? Are you mad? Is word courtesy and politeness means something to you or not anymore when it comes to this forum?

“Thank you and You’re Welcome” is what make us civilized human beings and not some egoistic morons who believe that they are entitled to everything they can get without any expression of appreciation.

Because, from what I can see, directory owner has been banned too and I would bet for saying one time too many “You’re welcome” this Directory Forum became Mad House of out off control Mods who lost sight of what forum should be in the first place.

Some of you suggested that sending PM will do the same as posting and I say: it’s rubbish and ill thought solution that even my 14 years old son call stupid.
He said: why these people can’t understand that it would be spamming? If 50 or 100 people sent PM and then get ‘you are welcome’ replies, it would abuse inbox, outbox, swell database and waste bandwidth whereas 3 words ‘you are welcome’ will use only 20 bites of space.

And then he has added: I hope eBay shutdown this - went berserk forum
My boy is one smart cookie

I can see how it's getting out of hand though, I do think that if you are accepted quickly and post a thank you in the appropriate thread, that it helps the other members regardless of whether it dumbs down the thread..

A history lesson might be in order.

Once upon a time there was a little forum where people used to post "pm sent" in threads, even though they hadn't because they wanted their signature to be on as many threads as possible. This made life hard for the thread starter because they worried that they were letting down their customers and had to chase the people who had said they had sent a pm to see what had happened.

As the forum grew up people got concerned because it didn't take long for their threads to drop down to the second or third page and the people were concerned that nobody the buyers were lazy and wouldn't look that far. So they started bumping their threads to return them to the first page but that was cheating the people who had new threads, or new responses to their threads so the only solution was to cheat as well.

One day it was decided that if you wanted to thank someone you could just leave them some green rep and sign it with your name.
And if a deal has gone well (or badly) you could leave an iTrader

Leaving feedback in the thread is fine but thanking each person individually for doing so should be kept in private using private messaging or the reputation system.

    =================

Back in the real world, private messages are deleted after 3 months so the diskspace they consume is only temporary. Posts are permanent.

This is the most lame ‘why’ I ever heard.

If thanking people is such a big problem for DP Management, then vBulletin program have mod call “Thanks”. It is button next to quote that people can use to thank each other without making posts and if DP Admins worry so much about keeping forum clean from “spam” posting, they should make that “Thanks” option available to their members instead of blaming us for trying to be polite and slap our asses with infractions and banning members in some cases.

Now, just because somebody made some Rules, just because they can, but without taking to consideration the consequences make that Rule as stupid as people who made them. We all know how some Governments in some Countries sometimes ago made Rules and Laws that prohibiting women to vote or Blacks to use the same washrooms as Whites use, or exterminate the Jews and put in concentration camps Japanese Americans and list goes on, but today we all looking back in disbelieve asking ourselves “who was these morons and what was they thinking”.

Rules made to lead and to point in to the right direction and not for sole purpose to abuse of it power and for needless punishment.

Admins and Mods in this forum should learn thing or two, most of all, how to provide their members with friendly environment without using hangman mentality.

I made a mistake as a beginner with only 10 posts and get a red flag as I posted in the sollicitation forum.

So now I can't post in Marketplace till january. That's unfair as solicitation is not at marketplace and confused me. It was not an intentional move.

Hope someone will gave me a chance and delete the infraction...

Trust me, nobody has time to be making rules just because they can.

The situation was really bad, the rule went in place, the situation vastly improved.

Far more people complained before the rule was in place (See Sarah K's post above) then complained after.

I must say excellent rules, but my favorite part was the end where you see in your signature "virgin" now I know I belong in this forum :)

agreed. what a silly rule. I got an infraction. so dumb, rules like this are an easy way to drive people away from this site. but I guess, it being so big, DP doesnt care if members leave or not.

I can actually see things from your point of view but we don't make rules just for the sake of it, we make them to try and keep this forum running well. You wouldn't believe the number of posts that are reported everyday! Sometimes, though, others spoil it for everyone else and that is a shame. Believe me, we're just trying to find the fairest way.

I've been a member here for a few years and already learned my lesson posting in the threads about submitting my sites over 1 year ago. But the last infraction i just got few minutes ago is on called for. I quoted the thread creator in which was not able to post live links to make them live for all DP members and guests. Guess i will not post live links for folks who are unable to now. This mean's the Solicitations & Announcements section should have it that only THREAD CREATOR can create and reply to his own threads. No member can reply to a thread he or she did not create (Just a idea)

Sorry about trying to do something nice on here. I'll stick to lurking again.

edit: o how nice a mod just removed all posts in that thread i posted live links on. lol

Anyone is welcome to post feedback in the threads or to ask questions. In the threads I've seen today there have been discussions about page rank changes, smarty errors, captcha problems, feedback on the number of categories and thank yous. All have been valid posts.

The posts that clutter the forum are the "thanks I'll submit" or even "I might submit later". They add nothing to the thread, nobody is better off for reading the posts.

Admittedly the "live link" issue is tricky - and I guess feedback from others would be useful. We have rules about live links here and posts to give live links could be seen to be circumventing those rules. However in S&A it can be argued that it's a valid reason - so long as the link does truly point to a directory.

Personally I see the ability to post a live link as a benefit for making a contribution here and being part of the community.

I understand in this case they were just trying to be helpful to others (which is commendable) however if every link is re-quoted, then you drive 1 post spammers back to the thread and then it gets out of control again.
