I'm looking for a little advice regarding multiple domain names pointed to the same web site/hosting package. Does it have a positive or negative affect on the site's optimization, or does it have no affect at all? Thanks for your input.
You need to provide more details. Why do you want to point multiple domains to a single site? If you want to link them together, they must be releavant to one another.
If you have more than 1 domain to showcase the exact same website, i.e. same content appearing under different domain names, that's duplicate content issue and will most definitely get you penalized. You should make your website accessible through just one domain name and 301 redirect any other domains you have to it. I think what he means is to use 1 hosting package for various different websites. In that case it's fine as long as you don't interlink them, since all will have same IP address.
Here's the story: Many years ago when I first started my site, I registered a domain name which matched the name of the site. Years later, my site's topic and content remains the same, but the name has changed. So, with the new name, I also registered the matching domain name. Basically I have two domains that point to one site, one hosting package. In general, my search engine results have been fine. In the coming weeks, we're preparing to switch to a Wordpress setup, so with that, I want to begin to optimize my site. Thanks for your help. I'd like to hear more input.
You have been lucky so far or the Page Rank on the sites are very low. Two domain names pointing to one web site is a Google penalty. If there are links between them, a Google penalty. If the content is the same, Google penalty. Are you beginning to see the pattern? If you move all of the content to the new Wordpress site, then kill the other and 301 redirect the domains to the new one.
Very helpful. Thanks. Next question: how do I make the 301 Redirect happen? Through the domain registrar or through the hosting?
I use GoDaddy with redirects - it does not have content (risking duplicate content penalties). GD allows description and keywords that actually gets those ghost sites listed on the search engines but not very high. I get about 30-40 hits per day from 10 extra urls.
Besides the GoDaddy route, what other redirect options are out there? How do you go about setting up a 301 Redirect?
