Should the motto "In God We Trust" be removed from U.S. currency?

    It was on coins prior.

    Most believe this fiction of it always being there, making most incorrect in their view that it remain for 'patriotic' reasons. I used to have this view before I actually learned the truth..

    Off the cuff, Christians and others will hate it because it smacks too much of the Islamic takbir, "Allahu Akbar," while secularists will hate it for the reasons stated throughout the thread. My $0.02.

    The United States were founded on Christian principles and leaving the motto on the currency is a good reminder to the values the founding fathers had when founding the nation. The motto should have been on the currency from the beginning and should be added to the Preamble.

    We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. In God We Trust

    LOL! Slipping in "In God We Trust" in, when it doesn't exist anywhere in the very Constitution he references, and posts - is this a serious attempt to confuse anyone? How about just "Peace, out" tagged at the end, or any other creative attempt?

    Gets better and better. :D

    Why anyone believes it helps their cause to simply attempt this kind of tactic is beyond me.

    My point was that even though some people are trying to put more emphasis on the historical and moral reasons to keep the motto, the actual underlying reason is purely religious. It seems to me that the Christians can't even consider something like 'god is great', which is not very different from 'in god we trust' in meaning but it is somehow reminiscent of another religion. If the sole reason was 'to remind the values' the exact wording wouldn't be very important, but if they want to maintain the bond between Christianity and state, then the wording is more important than the meaning. In any case, you can always find phrases that remind good values with no religious references, but I guess the Christians won't like that either.

    There is a reason why Christians should be interested in supporting the full separation between church and state. Today Christians are the vast majority in USA, so any serious challenge to things like the "in god we trust" motto is unlikely to succeed. However, in the future, as the ethnic composition of the country evolves, other religious groups will become numerous enough to develop a voice (name it voting capacity if you want) and will want to have their symbols attached to the state matters as well. This will lead to a very complicated situation that can be avoided if the state becomes fully secular right now. Imagine when a school board with some Muslim members in its council proposes to include in a Geology class a lesson about how a prophet split the moon in two. It may sound ridiculous today, but it's only a matter of time.

    I stated the motto should be added to the preamble. Then you replied that I slipped it in even though I stated it should be added , then I gave the example to where it could or should be added. I don't have a cause I was just stating since the country was founded on Christian values that the motto should have been added earlier. Not attempting a tactic. NPT...You read way to much into many people post. You missed the Christian value part.



    It could be added in a variety of ways

    Christian values shaped and influenced the values of the United States and the writing of the US Constitution.

    Yes, some of them were christian, But "not, in any sense, founded on the christian religion" states in plain English that, regardless of the founding fathers theological beliefs, or lack of, America was "not, in any sense, founded on the christian religion".

    I agree with this completely. In america particularly christianity has been subverted by a particularly devious group of people who, If they have the power to, Want to use it as an excuse to start wars and, By those who have no power, To impose their particular world view and so-called "values" on everyone else, And then cry about being "repressed" and fighting a "war against christianity" every time someone has the nerve to tell them to mind their own business.

    I mean, You only have to look at how these so-called "christians" conduct themselves on here, They twist what people are saying, They fraudulently represent things they have just made up as factual and they find it impossible to participate in anything even remotely resembling honest dialogue.

    It kind of confirms what i have long suspected; That people don't go to religion to find good wholesome values, They go to it to justify the repugnant values they already hold. I mean, If someone hates gays and fears women what better refuge could they find than a book which calls for homosexuals to be killed and demands that women are subservient.

    The founding fathers were influenced greatly by their church and christian values, to say not is utterly ridicules. Their christian values are repeated throughout their writings and can not be ignored except with a blind eye.

    The christian ones probably were influenced by their church and their religion in their personal lives, But "not, in any sense, founded on the christian religion" makes it clear that america is not founded on christianity, Regardless what the founders personally believed. What part of this are you still having trouble grasping?

    The founding of america and the writing of the constitution was entirely secular, By design.

    Personally I think that this thread is just a waste of space, we all know that in all reality that if they really wanted to change it then they wouldn't even consult the public they would just have some press conference and bam its over.

    For example look at the Skydome in Toronto, Built in 1989 they had a contest to choose the name of it and it became the Skydome and also became a landmark in Toronto. A couple of years ago MR Ted Rogers owner of Rogers came around and baught out the Sykdome, a couple of days after he renamed it to the Rogers Center pretty much throwing any history and or heritage down the drain.
    After he renamed it all he did was hold a press conference and say the name was changed!

    Like seriously Come on.


    I'm sure if they were going to take that off the $ bill then they would have already, plus I have just done some research and the only place this subject comes up is the MSNBC web site so its obviously just another method to drive traffic to there site!
