You can try Joomla with Community Builder (CB) Component. It has more modules and plugin to enhance.

phpfox can be used. Kootali is clone of facebook I heard. Socialengine is also familiar to world. Drupal has some module to make social network. I have no idea about joomla extensions. But I think joomla can be used by visiting their extension site. I used dolphin its also good.

I'm new to content management and can see its advantages, and have produced a far more powerful site under drupal than I have ever created myself - however you do sometimes get the feeling its a little lacking - could be I expect to much!!

I like Elgg as well, very clean and professional. I really like Drupal the best because of the professionalism that you will receive.

Phpfox is that alicia? Alicia's support is so terrible.

I speak as a webmaster who doesn't want you to spend money like I did and have to start completely over.

    Dolphin is a scam.

At first it seems so ideal, you upload and are ready to go with all kinds of modules. But, when you begin to think and say ...maybe I want to have a more branded community so others can take me seriously-- and you try to edit, or you try to upgrade with (costly modules), you are gambling with your time and your money. A guy got scammed so bad over there just check the forums.

Elgg looks really promising. I'm actually trying to get more information on their product because I want to start a niche social network.

I use BoonEx Dolphin for a lot of my work.

This year I have had some request to do work with Elgg and Social Engine too.

For the most part I think it depends on what it is you are trying to do. Boonex is great if you want to integrate A/V, chat and interaction.

If set up properly, BoonEx Dolphin works pretty good.
