    Normal (ordinary) banner code is

    <a href="link"><img src="banner"></a>

    Code (markup):
    Is this better?

    <a href="link" style="background: url('banner-120x60.gif'); display: block; height:60px; width:120px;">
      <span style="display: none;">Targeted keysords</span>
    </a>

    Code (markup):
    The display is same, but I think that this is more SEO.

    Google is aware of this technique and is not in favour of it. If detected you may face possible penalties.

    Your second example will be considered "hidden" text. Google doesn't care about this(it ignores CSS) but one of your competitors will. They will file a complaint with google.

    May I suggest that you add a javascript image "hide/show". If the cursor moves accross the image, the text is shown.

    And it is a poor SEO design. You left out the ALT and Title attributes.

    rofl... thats basically black hat SEO.. it's not natural, it's not real.

    Get over trying to trick Google and just build a decent well designed web site.

    Whilst I completely agree, it's easier said than done ;)

    Thats the problem with a lot of webmasters, they think that they can slap something together, put in some stupid black hat SET tricks thinking Google won't know and then live life in the fastlane at the top of the SERPS.

    If it was that easy people would be doing it... not everyone can be at the top.

    SEO is long term.... build a well structured site that is designed properly in terms of SEO and in the long term you will benefit.

    Hmmm a strong opinion.

    Viral content creation is really the only legitimate way to get good rankings, I agree. But this has always been the case with many things in the real world, a good book will make a lot of sales for instance. It's not really anything new.

    SEO is not really not about viral content creation. It is blatantly about finding ways to manipulate search engines

    I guess what I'm saying is you can't simply walk into a thread about SEO and tout something that isn't really about SEO.

    Telling someone to create better content is likely telling someone to just "make a successful business", it's much easier said than done. It's like... "well doh! guess I never thought of that one before"

    SEO is for the sole purpose of gaming the system and thats why this forums even exists, because thats what people are looking for.

    I never said anything about content I said a well structured site with SEO in mind.

    SEO to me doesn't include black hat techniques like hidden keywords... Google isn't stupid. Webmasters need to think long term, that's what SEO is about.
