There have been a number of articles suggesting that Squidoo and hubpages are excellent tools for ranking your material higher within Google. Squidoo and Hubpages both have some excellent content and so the theory is that Google trusts content on these domains more and donates better ranks to the pages within them. Both domains also have very good link profiles and thus people also believe this link profile somehow helps their squidoo/hubpages rank higher.
