Can they really charge me $100 to move my domain to another site?!

Okay, so here's the thing, I have about twenty domains hosted with SPHosting.com and they are basically the worst company to go with. Yesterday, two of my accounts got hacked, this isn't the first time either. Even I have Dreamhost and they've been one heck of a great host. This guy, Stuart, wants to charge me $35.00 PER backup to get my sites back to normal. It's not like they had out-of-date WordPress software either, here's my support ticket:

What a joke, this is probably where he gets all his profit from!

Yeah, well, he has all the domains locked, I have to pay $9 (to the initial $1 I already paid him) to change the nameservers.

If you change to HostGator (or many other hosts) they will move all those sites for you for free.

Pay them what you have to to get the name servers changed (never heard of anything like that before) and cut your losses with them.

Really, hmm, well, if anyone can help me here, please feel free to. I'm going to need probably just the domain hosting, unless you can provide 200 GB per month (and when I mean per month, I actually use 160 GB a month because of all the audio I host - nothing illegal by the way, just clips of stuff that I've been granted permission).

If you have the domains registered with him, ask him for the EPP code and transfer the domain to somewhere else.

Correct me if I am wrong but unless stated otherwise in a ToS or similar he is legally required to give you the EPP code

Various hosts do charge a fee for backup restoration. Not everyone does, but
it depends on their respective business models.

Unfortunately if you didn't keep your own backups, you might have to bite the
bullet if you really need your most recent files. And to answer your question:

wow, i would never purchase hosting from Sphosting, $100 to get a domain name? Wouldnt even pay them $10 if you canceled. To me, they look no better then the typical scammer.

    Sphosting = Scam

(posted that last line for anyone searching google ;))

And would you appreciate someone doing that to you, even if you think it isn't
    warranted?

That's not right to charge something like that.

Always read the fine print. Or just read reviews...

Go to hostgator. I use about the same amount of space and I'm at like 1/10th of capacity. And it's only like $10/mo, and they will transfer your sites as someone previously stated.

Also, prior to hostgator i had to move from a really bad host, and after battling them for awhile they finally coughed up the epp keys.

I believe they do have a legal obligation to do so, (but I'm not positive).

Okay then, well, I'll have to raise a bit of cash first, I'll see what I can do.

ICANN's site says registrars shall give the EPP code to its listed client. But the
EPP code won't do any good if you're not listed as the "owner" of the domain
name, nor your email listed to approve it with the gaining registrar.

If you do a WHOIS on the domain name and it shows the host as the "owner",
unfortunately you might have to fork over the $100 if the domain name means
    that much to you.

My name and address are under Registrant, Administrative Contact, and Technical Contact, does this mean anything?

Get your site back in control. Then make a compaint with BBB, businesses like theirs wont last in the long run.

Another lesson for people that mix their registrar with their hosting company. It's a terrible thing to do.

I gotta assume you didn't keep your own backups. Another lesson learned perhaps?

i would pay to get the back up of them. buy a new domain name find a decent host. Set up a 301 redirect from your current domain to your new domain. And learn from the mistake.
