I have a forum and would like to launch it in web. I have found one linux hosting package $3/per month, 5GB and 250GB transfer. As it is planned in the future my forum will have about 1000 users. What do you think about this package? Will it be enough to start with?
Forum with 1000 users (meaning active users) will produce high server load and will need at least VPS. Anyway if your forum is small now you can start with shared hosting which you described in your post and upgrade for VPS later.

I would suggest choosing a small package that allows you to upgrade easily. Look for packages with high cpu limits as thats the biggest problem with forum hosting.
A new forum can be hosted on a shared hosting plan however as the number of members and posts increase, upgrades will be mandatory. Choose a hosting provider which allows easy upgrades as and when needed.
I have decided to check my forum script on shared hosting before ordering a package. My friend has a shared package and I have just created a sub-domain and uploaded my scrip files to its root directory! My script worked properly on local host, but now it doesn't - it shows this - http://forum.skanzy.info/ How it can be explained?

Yes, I have tried fantastico, but the point is that fantastico forum doesn't support my language - Russian. I have found a ready script and it worked fine on local host. When I uploaded it to hosting, it has failed!
Script starts its installation procedure once you go to localhost/folder but when I have uploaded files to hosting installation process hasn't even been started.
Have a look at PHP settings. Compare the settings which you have on your computer with the server settings. In most cases changing the settings is the solution.
