Well I'm from UK, and for those of you who are with virgin media(me also), might be aware of there attempts to stop music piracy, by shutting down there own music resource subscribing service,

    More Info here
    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/09/24/virgin_digital_closes/

Also That VM have teamed up with BPI (or the other way round,), to send out letters to VM customers for illegal downloading, 3 strikes and apparently they will cut your internet connection off,

For me they can try this, but what can they do if we just use streaming sites? will they ban those sites to stop us from using them, so we use proxies then what can they do?

We download files through encrypted webservers(SSL), they cant tell if its illegal or not,

The only possible way would be if ISP's created there own browser that we can only use to access the internet through there service and it would be like they have parental controls over, like customers of VM can only visit sites that they allow, and would have to request sites to be added to a whitelist,

I cant see that ever happening but could be one way of slowing it down

As long the Internet exist, there will be piracy. It's just the same as long there are a human being, there always a thief.

For me, stopping piracy once and for all will be NO. Slowing them down just like you said will be YES.

I think big companies should leave individuals alone and stop trying to crush the fun. The odd song download hurts no-one. I can think of 3 artists I have discovered through p2p and youtube. I have went on to buy albums for all three and attend a concert of 1.
In my view corporate greed and bullying should be punished by hitting them where it hurts, i.e. in the pocket, by boycotting.

I think its mainly just music and media companies cracking down on it actively

Imagine Adobe for example, what if they suddenly made it 100% impossible to crack/hack Photoshop/Illustrator, how would any young aspiring graphic designers learn them and then buy them later in life? Even by the time you get to college you're expected to know them, and by the time you're getting a job most expect you to be fluent in them, would this be possible without having pirated versions? (Well actually it is, just most people don't think to go on eBay and buy a 1-2 version old copy to learn on cheap :))

Arrrr naw they canny stop us here pirates.

But on a serious note. Your taking them too seriously, this is a scare tactic (even a representitive for them on bbc news said so). If they do track what you are downloading, wouldn't you think that is a breach of privacy? I know I havn't signed anything saying that they can monitor what I download, they havn't even sent a letter saying they are doing so.

Although I don't download things like that, my flatmates might, and i'm going to play the privacy card if/when they send a letter.

The browser would not work either, cause you cant even restrict people using msn etc to send, and what if the person emails the music, they cant read your email.
