Question about website access via cell phones

Can you make a website that is only accessible through a cell phone, or at least is formatted specificlly for cell phones? This is what I want to do.

I want to create a site that allows users to view certian educational videos while on location somewhere through their cell phone or pda. I was wondering how I do this, and if there was a script to buy.

    Thanks

If you wrote the page in some sort of WAP format most computer users would not be able to read this with an ordinary browser.

    Wiki on WAP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Application_Protocol

If you're talking about a video site, you'd also have to ensure that your video format could be read by a mobile phone, so .3gp would probably be most suitable here.

Are their scripts I can buy to allow these two features to work? Also, should I use a .mobi extension

You do not need to purchase any scripts to get a video into .3gp format, you just need to buy a program that can convert your videos into the .3gp format.

As for making a WAP website, I just typed this into Google, you might want to have a look: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=coding+wap+pages&meta=

Finally, you can use whatever domain extension you want.

.mobi sounds more pro for your job. But I don't know why you want only users from mobile and pda can view your site?

I'm guessing it's because there's nothing else like it (that I know of). If you could make a website that actually looked good on mobile phones and advertised it enough for teenagers to see it, then I'm sure it would be a big hit. What are your plans, some sort of community for phones, or just a general site with videos, pictures etc on it?

Basically all that script does is decides whether the visitor is using a mobile phone, or a computer and directs them to the appropriate page. You would still need to build the website in both HTML and in WAP and all the script does is chooses which is more appropriate for the browser.

As for videos, hosting a .3gp video is the same as hosting any other video on the internet, it just has to be in the .3gp format to be read by mobiles, much like how iPods need a .mp4 format to read the video.

I would recommend the IMTOO 3GP Converter to convert your videos into .3gp http://www.imtoo.com/3gp-video-converter.html
