90 cents is for two pounds of rice ;)

Rats are more expensive because they are fattened in the rice fields.

This is a doormouse that has been a food source since Roman times. The doormouse is fattened on walnuts and chestnuts.

Macaroni with dormouse and thrush sauce

    1 edible dormouse
    8 thrushes
    1kg skinned tomatoes
    1 clove garlic
    1 onion
    Chopped parsley and basil
    Half-glass dry red wine
    Salt and pepper
    1 red chilli pepper
    Macaroni

Method Skin dormouse and remove innards and leave in running water for a day and a night. Cut dormouse into pieces, soak it for an hour in a half-water, half-vinegar mixture. Rinse. Clean and pluck the thrushes. Soften the chopped onion and garlic in lard in a casserole dish, add the dormouse and thrushes and brown them. Add red wine. When the wine evaporates remove dormouse and thrushes, add tomatoes, salt, pepper, parsley, basil and red chilli pepper. Add lid and cook on low heat for 20 minutes, return the meat and cook until tender. Boil pasta in salted water, drain and serve

I never ask in my journeys abroad what I am eating. My hunger will dictate how bad of a smell and taste that I will tolerate.

I saw yesterday on the travel channel where Eskimos hacked open a seal and ate it raw.

But it gets better. They mixed the shit with fat and ate it like it was peanut butter.

Anything in your travels ever happen like this? hehe

I have not eaten seal but I have eaten raw meat that was not fit for human consumption that reminded me of road kill. Not sure what it was.

A 'rat plague' is causing a severe food shortage in the impoverished Chittagong Hill Tracts region of Bangladesh, close to the borders of India and Burma.

The rat plague, and the food shortages began two years ago in India then moved into Bangladesh in January and have now headed south into Burma as well.

According to the UN's development programme, about 125,000 people have been affected by food shortages and the rats.

All people in the area have to eat are two bowls of smoked rat a day, accompanied by the wild roots found in the forest.

Hahahaha! Close to my heart, man. I have a weird love of the history of cooking, and have read everything from Roman recipes and methods to my personal favorite, Antoine Careme.

Spanish quails stuffed with fall fruits in a quail-armagnac jus, inspired by my read of Careme on a sauce derived from roast game birds.

I'm very surprised why we haven't heard why increases in US money supply (needs to be quantified) are responsible for this four fold increase in rat prices.

    Meanwhile....Quail = Great; Rats = UGH!!!!

I think the point of the thread is that the economy around the world even in unexpected areas is tough.

If you think the economy in various parts of the world is tough.....try eating undercooked rat that hasn't been marinated.

    That is TOUGH!!!!!

Some governments like India are promoting the consumption of rat meat.

Some countries such as the Philliphines, Pakistain, and Burma have widespread grain shortages.
