John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate

Sarah Palin, 44 year old Alaskan Governor for the Republican Vice President???

    It's official: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25970882/

Poor choice IMO but then again I can't think of anyone who would convince me to support John Mccain.

    Can you explain why?

I have to say, strictly on politics, what the hell is McCain thinking? He has hammered Obama for his lack of experience, and picks a running mate that is 3 years Obama's junior. She's strongly pro-choice, which McCain feels he needs (and under the current hegemony of the Christian right over the party, I'd say, he's right), but if he was doing this to pursue the line he's been playing for some time - peeling Clinton's supporters away from Obama - this was about as clubfistedly moronic as it gets. In my opinion, a dumb, dumb move, politically speaking.

Yeah, I think he shot himself in the foot and lost one of his best arguments against Obama - the experience issue. If he wanted to go this way, it would seem Kay Bailey would have been a better selection.

Sure is going to be interesting. We will either have the first Black President or the first Woman Vice President.

    Interesting times.

I think she understands the economy better than Obama and McCain.

He probably picked her to gain the flip flopping Clinton supporters. The ad campaign that McCain is running today is using Clinton quotes against Obama. I think McCain is reaching try to stop the wave Obama created.

This pick may be great strategy only time will tell.

Yeah, she's the only one on either ticket with any kind of executive experience... If a bunch of Senators want to attack her on a lack of experience this is going to kind of backfire.

Palin has an approval rating above 85%. She's a budget hawk but she isn't a traditional culture warrior because her positions are a little more nuanced.

Wanna talk about a bad VP pick? How about Biden, the ultra-authoritarian friend of the banks! His selection did more to undermine Obama's message of change than anything I've seen yet.

Wow, I think this is a brilliant choice from initial glance. I don't know much about her policies to be quite honest. However, being a woman she will likely help pick up some female voters who were voting for Clinton for the same reasons. Also, being from Alaska, she might convince a lot of people about drilling in ANWR, which I think we need but it is a temporary solution.

The question here is, does Palin neutralize Biden?

    Arggh, I hate politics.

I agree, based on his "Clinton" ads, this is likely one strong reason why he chose her - and think this will backfire on him quite badly. The women voting for Clinton voted for a woman they felt spoke to the issues of concern to them. As an analogy, had Obama lost, would Alan Keyes on the ticket peel Obama's voters to vote for John McCain? The answer is an obvious "no," to me.

I agree with your analysis except for one important thing. She is not pro-choice. She is a strong pro-lifer. This fact needs to be made clear as the true Hillary supporters will not vote for the Republican ticket because of their stance on Woman's rights. Also I really do not think that there are that many Hillary supports that haven't gone over to Obama. The only ones left are ones that have never been interested in politics before Hillary that do not know that Mccain is against a Woman's right to choose and would appoint Supreme Court Justices that would like to over turn ROE VS WADE.

Ha! Uh, yeah, it should read "pro-life," which is what I meant to say. And I would agree with you, this is going to be a very difficult thing for the ticket to overcome, if they truly want to make a substantive dent on Clinton's supporters, on gender alone.

Wow: A long shot candidate from out of nowhere. (with apologies to homebiz).

I read an article recently speaking to potential strengths and weaknesses of a variety of choices, with an emphasis on how they would be perceived by potential voters or attacked by the Dems. All had pros and cons. She was referenced...but I have to admit I glossed over her.

For those who enjoy talking politics her choice will provoke a heap load of conversation, both pro and con.

Well at the very least, within these United States, we have a candidate from Hawaii, a candidate from Alaska, a woman, and an African American.

Who needs the White old boy network and the lower 48!!!!!

There aren't any guarantees, of course. I think Biden was a wise choice, answering the call of a deficiency in foreign policy experience.

I think that McCain was screwed, however he turned, and I would say that is due to the effective stranglehold on the party of the Christian right. If he chose a more moderate person respecting abortion, he'd lose the rightist vote out of hand, and the election; choosing a strong pro-lifer ensures, in my mind, he will gain nothing in the effort to "peel" votes from the center-left.

I think I may have jumped on this too soon, and need to admit outside of her stance on abortion and her youth, I know very little about her - mine was a knee jerk response of "WTF?," and for that, I regret it. I'd love to learn more about her - do you have that article handy somewhere, Dave?

OK - but are easy listening, gutless soft-rock ballads allowed in the oval office? :D

Actually, you are wrong. She is strongly pro-LIFE....

Oops, I see you made the correction there NPT...

She is also a member of Feminists for Life which I don't know if I necessarily agree with....

I thought one of the candidates would have northpointaiki, guerrilla, grim or Gtech as the VP.

northpointaiki an Gtech are extremely smart.

Right or Wrong Grim would not change his stance on anything.

    And guerilla is guerilla
