My First Web Design

As you may know from my other thread. I am quite new to graphics and still am experimenting with everything trying to get as good as I can. I followed a web design tutorial and came up with this design. What do you guys think of it?

    Constructive Criticism is appreciated.

Graphically its good, but its difficult to critique a design based purely on its looks.

After all, a huge proportion of the success of a web site is centred around its usability. If you can upload it somewhere and give us a link that would be great!!

Also personally i think it would have the stripy yellow/grey as the background to the nav bars and change the buttons themselves to a different colour/texture.

Rather than the other way round

Well I can't really upload it anywhere as it is just a design. It hasn't been coded or anything. And the main goal when creating this was to build up my graphic skills. I am no coder so the usability part I couldn't really bring into it.

Hi, its good for the first web design, i remember my first web design project and it was what i would now consider very bad, right now down to business, this is what i would do if it were me, dont take this as a judgement day upon your work, firstly seperate the character from the back, so it stands out more , if you see one of my very old designs below, you could cut it out and enhance the colours to a degree and add a slight glow and slight drop shadow to it so it makes it look like it is coming more out of the page rather than just a picture added to the page.

The Titles that say news - make them more visible, the side links, change the font to arial normal, and decrease in side and make a side navigational area i.e. each one has its own section. i would get rid of them orange and black stripes from all the top and side navigation bar and just have regular bold text headers down the side, i would add a white to transparent gradient to the top nav bar and make it more shiny and have the first link Home in a seperate colour matching to the top colour but with the shinyness on top of that as well, so basically it would be a orangey brown colour area not to wide where the home text would go then the rest black with the new applied gradient, and the font to be arial normal around about size 11 , then after each link have the down line i.e. | and make it white and , then decrease the transparency a little but not too much.

Instead of the grey texture have a grey to white to grey gradient - add some lorem dummy text and a dummy advert so can see how it looks, with the seperation of the main character from the background, put the stripey orange and black design behind it, so it comes down to about his frindge but behind him when he is seperate and maybe add some grunge effect to part of it , remove the copyright button as you are saying the same thing twice and where the copyright text is change it to arial normal size 10 and center it and also add the text links like you have at the top under it as well.

I agree. Theme is good but cant comment much without actually browsing the site. All the best and keep it up.

this is great for the first attempt, i would want a ad spot on the top banner as the side banner is quite a blind ad spot. there is something missing from it but i cant put my finger on it.

I love the header graphics, but the text can be smaller. It just look amateurish that way.

i think you should take off these yellow strips. It would look little more solid and professional.
