    Hi

im not sure whether this is the right section for this but i wanted to ask something about http://www.dotncom.com/

Now they claim to be offshore but you do a who.is and they its based in usa....Now i asked the support about this and they said they bought the ip in america but are acctually based in canada so thats why its offshore..

I just wanted to know should i trust it like is it possible to buy a ip and use it in canada. And are they a genuine company

No offence intended to anyone associated with them but i like to make sure of these things

Erhm, canada is not offshore ? Canada is basicly as strict as USA and don't really allow warez!

If you want to use warez, then host in Netherlands, Sweden or Germany... It will not make you safe, bure more safe then Canada! Don't host in Canada!

    AFAIK
Canada is not offshore. So i advise you to buy from a established offshore host if you are serious about your website

    Hey,

Then you need to tell your datacenter that they are wrong....

And if the datacenter says that Warez is illegal, then i doubt that you are dealing directly with the DC, but with some middle man that is looking for some sales and cash!

No, Ip addresses are assigned for a specific geographical location. An ip address CANNOT be use in another city, let alone another country.

If you do a who is on 24.235.155.144, it's Peterborough, ON, Canada -- where I am. I cannot change this info unless I use a proxy site I can appear from somewhere else.

If I could change my location, if anyone could change their IP randomly, our ISP would not know where traffic is coming from or going to. In fact, we could do illegal things and never get caught in that case.

An ISP assigns the addresses for the city that the server/computer is in... ALWAYS.

This guy has a server in Washington... not Canada.

(And by the way, the laws are VERY strict in Canada than the USA when in comes to Technology.)

    I can't understand ! why ! you always reply ! using ! exclaimation marks on every ! 3rd to 5th word !

--> Now, if you do care to demonstrate to me how this is possible... I'm all ears. In fact, I think it's your duty to properly answer a business question... not just blow it off like to did there.

    Well,

Upon my sparked curiosity I decided to do traces of the domain. I came across multiple IP's that are used by the domain name in question.

Specifically I now know that he is in some relation is http://cogentco.com/us/ through who is and trace sources. I also noted that the IP hit Washington Multiple times, it also hit Boston and even Toronto twice. According VisualIpTrace's online demo program.

Further investigation led to me to figure out that the ip address is from Oakville, Ontario Canada. The resulted Ip is an oddly formatted one: 38.99.180.66 (For Oakville anyways) This coming from geobytes.com.

I don't know who provides the servers connection to the internet for this guy... but the only high speed corp in that area is Cogeco Cable which is one of the leading cable companies in Canada.

I would like to know if anyone has anything else to add regarding this... I find it odd how deep, deep research lead me from Washington, to Boston to Toronto to Oakville.

I still stick to the geographical ip addresses story.

If it's in the north american continent, it's not off shore. North America contains the US, and Canada for that matter. So, your IP is "onshore" not offshore. If you have offshore servers, provide those IPs to prove yourself, because as it stands, you're not offshore, and it's not safe to host warez with you...
