    Edit+ http://www.editplus.com/

It has an evaluation popup reminding you to register when you start the program, but you can just bypass it by clicking a button.

If it really has to be free I would recommend 1st Page 2000, which you can download here:
    http://www.evrsoft.com/

I used to use that all the time and found it easy and functional. Now I use HomeSite, which is a nice code editor from Macromedia. I believe it retails for about $99, but they have a free 30-day trial:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/homesite/

Recently I tried a code editor plugin for Firefox, because I thought it would be cool to be able to do all my html editing and ftp right from my browser, but I couldn't get the hang of it. I think it was called FireBug.

Duh, and actually I just re-read your post. If you're really looking for free, why don't you just edit the template right through the wordpress "Theme Editor" page?

    Hi!

I usually use Kompozer when I only need to edit basic html pages. It's quick, user friendly and open source. Check it out here:

You could search http://www.freshmeat.net for free software. Bluefish seems to be quite popular in the open source community. But honestly, I recommend against HTML editors. Unless you knows exactly what you are doing, it's not a good idea to write HTML yourself. If you want to publish, I'd suggest getting a CMS and not waste time on design.

Note Pad is quite a good one, it comes free with Microsoft, if you are starting from beginning, try using it. Helps you get a good foundation for HTML and stuff....
